About 150,000 people died in Banda Aceh in the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Some parts of the city were completely submerged. Since then, there are many humanitarian organizations that help rebuild. The long-running conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian military (TNI) was finally resolved by a peace agreement on August 15, 2005. Since then, the peace process has been in disarray.
The first direct and democratic local elections were held in the region in 2006. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, was appointed. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate, with temperatures close to average. The annual temperature of the city is 27 °C.

Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but they do need an Indonesian visa. It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, but this should only apply to Malaysian citizens.
There are non-stop night buses, with a travel time of 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price starts from Rp 110,000 in a seat-sized bus to Rp 200,000 in a multi-seater bus.
Mini-buses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are usually longer. The prices are slightly lower than the bus. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. That will be a total of 20 hours.
There are daily flights between Banda Aceh and Medan, a one-hour flight, Jakarta, a two-hour flight and 40 hours, or Singapore, about four hours. There are no more buses to the airport. The only way to get to the city is by taxi to the airport, which costs Rp 100,000 (2019).

The taxi counter is on the far left when you exit the arrivals exit. The visa process at this airport is similar to that at other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is the port of Belawan, near Medan. Receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route when coming from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee Port, Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main means of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public taxi). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the locals were used to overcrowding, but now stability has returned.
An example of becak prices is: Airport - Great Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus station - Grand Mosque: 8000 rupees; Grand Mosque - Penayong: 5000 Rp. In the city it should usually cost 10,000 Rp. It is possible to go on a "Tsunami Tour" since there are still many ships and monuments in the country dedicated to the devastating day in 2004. There are about 65 non-governmental organizations working in Banda Aceh;
however, they generally do not recruit non-Indonesians into the community. These NGOs include various UN and EU organizations, USNS, Care, Americare, Islamic Relief, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, Australian Red Cross, Turkish Red Crescent, Kuwait Red Crescent, French Red Cross, IMC, IOM

In the center of the town there are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets.
There are also small souvenir shops that sell various local products. Hermes Palace Shopping Center is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has over 100 shops with a restaurant, supermarket and clothing stores. The Acehnese breakfast food nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, is sold in cafes everywhere.
Padang food stalls and restaurants are open in the pristine part of town and fruit carts are everywhere. There are several nice cafes with refreshing views of the rice paddies around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town. There are three fast food restaurants in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.
As with all travel, smarts and good manners are all you need to navigate this small town. However, some points should be kept in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer today than many European cities, it is better not to go out alone after 10 pm.
