Dr. Brand was born in India to missionary parents and has spent most of his life treating people with leprosy. One of Dr. Brand's greatest discoveries was that people with leprosy do not have "bad flesh" that just rots away. In fact, their meat is as healthy as yours or mine.

The problem is that blood flow is limited to certain parts of the body and their nerve endings die. With the death of their nerve endings, they are unable to sense danger to their bodies. Lepers live without pain. Don't you wish you could live without pain?
Not when you understand that pain is the greatest enemy of leprosy. Many times they harm their body without knowing it. They do not feel pain. Dr. Brand knew that lepers often went blind. Why? Because they did not blink. They didn't blink because they didn't feel the pain when our eyes get dry.
Dr. Brand solved this problem by attaching a massaging muscle to their eyelids and then teaching them to chew gum. Dr. Brand was amazed that lepers often lost fingers and toes overnight. He knew they wouldn't just disappear into thin air, so he let the workers watch the lepers sleep.
To the surprise of the workers, they found that rats had entered and were devouring bare fingers and toes. The lepers, who felt no pain, never woke up to drive the rats away. And so -- as the book's title says, "Pain is a gift no one wants."
