Padre Pio arrived at the Capuchin monastery of San Giovanni Rotondo in 1916 and lived there for 52 years until his death in 1968. He was not only devoted to God, but also cared for the sick and supernatural forces. He was canonized in 2002. In April 2008, the saint's body was exhumed and placed in a glass coffin in the sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

The Shrine of Padre Pio is open daily and is currently free, although donations are appreciated. Visitors can see where Padre Pio said mass, his cell, which still contains his books and clothes, and the Sala San Francisco where he greeted the faithful. To accommodate the large number of pilgrims, the modern Pilgrimage Church of Padre Pio was built in 2004 behind the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, it can seat 6,500 people for services and 30,000 standing outside.
Masses are held daily in the new church as well as in Santa Maria delle Grazie. The modern Via Crucis is located on the forest hill above the church. Padre Pio's memorial day is celebrated on September 23 in San Giovanni Rotondo with torchlight processions and liturgical ceremonies.
