As always, Emily's first work, which I reviewed here, was my 2021 Complete Book in December, so when Emily contacted me about having a character named after me in one final gift, I was beside myself. Feeling happy. There was also some panic - what if I didn't like Linda Hill in One Last Gift or didn't like the book?

Oh my poor heart. I'm beginning to think that Emily Stone might be a great author of this type of novel. The first one was, always, my favorite read of 2021 in December, so one last giveaway had a lot to live up to. It exceeded all my expectations.
One Last Gift
I could no longer worship, even if it reduced me to a wretched crumb. The quality of Emily Stone's writing is simply fantastic. She seems radiant with emotion and her ability to convey emotion, literal and metaphorical, love and fear in all its forms and sadness is beyond comprehension.
It's not like you're reading about Cassie and the others, you're living their emotions every moment with them. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that while One Last Gift is romantic, uplifting, and exhilarating, it is also deeply cathartic. There is real, intelligent, human insight in Emily Stone's narrative.

The characters are so fascinating because they are layered and multifaceted. Everyone has flaws, virtues and flaws. Just like in real life, they can feel completely authentic and true, generous and selfish, and can be impulsive and deliberate in their reactions and actions. I think the most poignant part of the character is Emily Stone's exploration of how grief affects us as individuals and really shows that there is no right way to grieve.
I loved the plot of One Last Gift because it completely captivated me with the ups and downs of Cassie's life. However, before I could read any more, I had to take a short break from reading to let my heart recover from what was happening.
My Review Of One Last Gift
I think it says a lot about the characters - especially Cassie and Sam - that I went to bed wondering what was going on with them without reading. I may have just finished reading One Last Gift, but I feel like the characters in the story, including Linda Hill, will stay with me for a while.
One last gift is truly wonderful. It is written with compassion, skill and genuine love. I respected him without hesitation. I defy any reader to finish the story and remain untouched. I absolutely, absolutely loved it and will never forget it. Be sure to read it too.
Emily Stone lives and works in Chepstow and writes a wonderful piece of literature every December in an old Victorian mansion. Her first novel was inspired in part by the death of her mother, when Emily was seven, and the desire to write something that reflects the fact that you carry this grief into adulthood, long after the event itself.
