One could easily spend a day there, or take in more of the various shops, historic buildings, gardens and everything else that makes up Old Salem. Here are some tips for visiting Old Salem as well as background information and places you won't want to miss!

This post is part of our growing series on things to do in Winston-Salem. It's also featured in our guide to North Carolina museums and our year-round collection of Unique Things to Do in North Carolina. Old Salem is free to walk around, but if you want to participate in some of the additional interactive exhibits, you'll need a ticket.

Tickets can only be purchased online at the Visitor Center, Horton Center, and Moravian Book & Gift. Tickets provide access to all open buildings, including the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. Read more: The NC Museum of History in Raleigh (+7 Things We Love About It!) Visiting Old Salem In Winston-Salem

share with you. Of course, you don't have to mix everything in one day. ALL-IN-ONE tickets allow you to enter two consecutive days. This is great if you live in the area or don't want to do it all in one day. All the history you'll learn while visiting Old Salem is related to the architecture.

There are some cool buildings with different effects. You'll find Central European influences mixed with Greek Revival, and remnants of early American style. Even if there are cars on the road as you walk, it's great to walk the sidewalks of Main Street and soak up the architecture of Old Salem.

Learning about African-American contributions to Old Salem is as important as eating Moravian Cookies (see below). Their contribution to the community was fundamental and beyond, as many black Moravians were skilled potters, carpenters and even translators for the bilingual community. New efforts are being made to expand what is offered to visitors in Old Salem.

Note: Initiatives like the Slave Settlement Project and the Hidden City Project work to better inform young people and the general public about Moravian heritage, regardless of skin color. If anything else happens to shed light on African-American history in and around Old Salem, we'd love to hear about it.

Another way to get in on the interactive fun is with the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) which you'll find right after crossing the Heritage Bridge from the Visitor Center. They offer a variety of tour packages and tickets for visitors, with an emphasis on going behind the scenes at the museum.

Another great way to experience Old Salem is through Salem Pathways, an interactive guide on your mobile device! What do you think about this? If you've never been there, what's the first thing you want to do there? We'd love to talk about it in the comments section below. What's in those cookies? Ice cream? whipped cream? It looks great. It's slightly creamy and tastes like the most epic cream cake I've ever had.

A great cafe awaits! Thanks for stopping by and commenting. The coffee mug, originally an advertisement for a coffee maker, has been in many places over the years. At one point, the cafeteria was as far north as Salem College girls could go without going out.
