Although gift cards are usually accepted after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, in many cases they quickly become worthless. Sometimes there is little warning before a business closes. "I usually tell people if they have a gift card in their wallet, use it yesterday," said Melissa Jacobs, a bankruptcy law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A Bankrate survey found that 29% of adults have at least one gift card that has expired, 27% have lost at least one, and 21% have lost it because a business closed permanently before at least one card was used. It is important to verify that you are in the correct location before entering any information at an actual merchant or card site.

Another way to check your balance is through shopping apps, and some retailers like Target let you add gift cards to your app wallet. Amazon says you can view your gift card balance in your account. The balance will be saved when you use the gift card for an order or add it to "Your Account" for future purchases.
