But when consumers will use plastic cards or digital codes is another matter. According to a survey by Bankrate.com in July, 51% of American adults they have unused gift cards, coupons and store credit. This gives an average of $116 per person in gift cards.
Rule of thumb for a gift card? Use it before it's gone. The Federal Trade Commission recommends using the card as soon as possible. It is also advisable to treat gift cards as cash and redeem them early to get the full value. Another good reason to use cards sooner rather than later: the risk of a merchant or restaurant going out of business.

While gift cards are often accepted after a business files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, in most cases they quickly become worthless. Sometimes there is little or no warning before a business closes. "I usually tell people if they have gift cards in their wallet, use them yesterday," Melissa Jacoby, a law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, previously told USA TODAY.

A Bankrate survey found that 29% of adults let at least one gift card expire, 27% lost at least one, and 21% were lost because a business closed permanently before using at least one card. It's important to go to the actual merchant or card's website and make sure you're in the right place before entering any information.
