Banda Aceh, on the coast of Sumatra, was for a long time an industrial, navigation and trading center in the east of India, and a major trading port between the region, India and Arabia. About 150,000 people were killed in the December 26, 2004 Tsunami in Banda Aceh and parts of the city were completely submerged.
Since then many aid organizations have been there to help with rebuilding. The long-standing conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) has now been resolved through a peace agreement on 15 August 2005. In 2006, the region held its first democratic elections.
In 2007 the first democratically elected governor, Arundi Yusuf, was appointed. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate, with average temperatures. The annual temperature of the city is 27 degrees Celsius. However, the city experiences a wet and dry season, with June to August being the driest months of the year.
By Bus[Edit]
Banda Aceh has no real dry months where the average rainfall is less than 60 mm. On average, the city receives less than 2000 mm of rain annually. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa. It is possible to get a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh airport.

The consulate in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you fill out all the paperwork before noon, although this only applies to Malaysian citizens. There are non-stop night buses, travel time from 9-13 hours - from Maidan to Banda Aceh.
Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Madha, Maidan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 in a standard size bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide seat bus. Minibuses can take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journeys are usually longer.
Prices are slightly cheaper than coaches. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutakan and Takingon. It will be 20 hours in total. Flights fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a one-hour flight, Jakarta, a two-minute and 40-hour flight, or Singapore, about four hours.
By Bus[Edit]
There is no other bus service to the airport. The only way to get to the city center is by airport taxi, which is set at 100,000 Rp (2019). The taxi counter is on the left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other entry gates in Indonesia.
The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belwan Port, which is near the Maidan. Receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route when coming from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ella-Lahi, Banda Aceh port, you can go to Palau Vie and Palau Aceh.

The main ways to get around are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi labi (public taxi). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the locals got used to paying, but now stability has returned. Examples of background fees are: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000;
Bus Terminal - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penyang: 5000 Rp. Within the city, usually Rp 10,000 should do it. It is possible to go on a "tsunami tour" because there are still many ships and other monuments dedicated to the devastating day of 2004.

There are approximately 65 NGOs operating in Banda Aceh; However, they rarely hire non-Indonesians locally. There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local products. Hermès Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores as well as a food court, supermarkets and clothing stores. Acehnese breakfast nasi gora, rice cooked in coconut milk, is sold at coffee shops everywhere.

Grocery stores and fast food restaurants are open in the downtown area, and fruit carts are everywhere. There are some nice coffee houses with open views of the rice fields around Oli Kering and Jal Tengku Iskandar on the edge of town. Three fast food restaurants are located in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.
By Boat[Edit]
Since it's all common sense and good manners are all you need to get along in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is much safer than most European cities today, it is still better not to go out alone after 22:00.
Because Sharia law is in effect, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is possible. Violations of the locally recognized interpretation of Sharia law can be punished by the Sharia police in the form of corporal punishment and public humiliation. Muslim women must wear the hijab in public.
