Nocticula Profane Gift - The Lady in Shadow, Nocticula (pronounced nok-TICK-you-lah), [1] is a demon lord who deals with the metaphysical qualities of darkness and lust. Lady Nocticula appears in her true succubus form, wearing her dark hair in an intricate style. Her eyes have no pupils, her fingers have claws, and her feet end in stone hooves.

Nocticula Profane Gift

Her bat-like wings are covered in glowing runes and three sting-point tails complement her demonic visage. As her brother to Socothbenoth, however, she frequently shifts shape to fulfill the deepest and darkest desires of those who behold her.[2] Nocticula is a master of seduction, so much so that even other mighty demon lords are not immune to her persuasive charm.

Her greatest triumph was the seduction and murder of Vyriavaxus, the former demon lord of the shadows. As a result, most demon lords treat her with extreme caution. Despite their severe tolerance, her unearthly beauty also inspires lust and obsession, which assuages their fears. The one exception to Nocticula's wary relationship with other demon lords is her brother Socothbenoth, with whom she maintains a relatively friendly and, most disturbingly, often incestuous relationship.

Nocticula dwells in the abysmal domain known as the Midnight Isles, an island kingdom shrouded in sensual immorality and eternal darkness.[3] Cruel sadist on one hand and seductive beauty on the other, she is patroness of murderers and succubi (both literal and figurative). The guilds of Assassins in her service are constantly at odds with other guilds, especially the dreaded Red Mantis, which often leads to lengthy Shadow Wars.

Relations To Others[]

She is especially popular with the drow of Golarion, and has been hired as a protector of House Misraria.[4] She is also worshiped in decaying places like Katapesh, Geb and some River Kingdoms.[5] Nocticula is also revered among the Lamyros, a group of Pharasma-cursed creatures who detest all gods and take pleasure in confusing and destroying their mortal servants.[6]

Nocticula is the second demon lord to become a deity, the first being Lamashtu. Nocticula's followers included a once-heretical sect called the Cult of the Redeemer Queen, whose members rightly believed their patron was trying to leave behind her demonic nature and become a goddess of artists, outcasts, and midnight.

Others believed this was a ploy on Nocticula's part; although these skeptics agreed that Nocticula sought true godhood, they believed that the demon lord sought to become a god-slayer, and sowed rumors of her quest for redemption to hide her true intentions. Likewise, the cult has faced opposition and assassinations from more orthodox worshipers of Nocticula.

The goddess herself seemed to enjoy the strife these disagreements caused, and she granted her once-heretical followers the same magic that she granted to her traditional evil-worshippers. In the end, the Cult of the Redeemer Queen proved right since Nocticula stopped granting spells to evil worshipers of her.

While the target is under this effect, it gains a +4 profane bonus on all saving throws against targets other than Nocticula. Nocticula's energy drain functions identically to that of a succubus, except that she drains 2 levels when using this ability against mythic creatures, or 1d6+4 levels against non-mythic creatures.

As a swift action during an act of passion with a willing mortal, Nocticula can grant profane ascension.

The target's name appears in glowing Abyssal runes on Nocticula's wings, and a crimson mark manifests itself somewhere on the target's body. The target immediately gains a +6 profane bonus to any other ability score of its choice, a +4 profane bonus to any other ability score of its choice, and the ability to see in darkness.

A single creature can have only one profane ascension active at a time. While the effect persists, Nocticula can communicate telepathically with the target at any distance and can use any of her spell-like abilities through the target, manifesting them as if the target were using them.

A profane ascension can be removed by a miracle or a wish. Nocticula can remove it as a free action, inflicting 4d6 points of Charisma drain and imparting 1d10+10 permanent negative levels to the victim. Unlike most demon lords, Nocticula does not possess a frightening presence ability.
