Basyariah still sheds tears when she remembers that terrible day. "Not long after the earthquake, people started screaming that seawater was coming. Nobody understood what was happening - the tsunami was unlike anything they had ever seen. "I thought it was Judgment Day", says Basyariah. Her husband had taken the motorbike to go shopping, so she grabbed their five children and started running. They couldn't get out of the rapidly rising water, so he started looking for a place to hide above. The earthquake destroyed many buildings on their street, but they found a house that was still standing and the six of them ran inside and climbed to the second floor - but soon realized it wasn't high enough. "It was only a minute before the rain reached us " says Basyariah. "The first wave was black - we didn't know if it was oil or water." A second later, an even bigger wave came. By that time, the family was captured. "We were floating with our heads touching the sky - the water was around our necks.

I thought we were going to drown," Basyariah says. Then, through the window, they saw a strange sight - a large fishing boat coming towards them. "People were screaming," he says. "But then it hit the top of the house and it stopped." His 14-year-old son managed to make a hole in the roof and climb onto the roof. He brought the family out, one by one, and they all got on the boat. Others joined them. "When I got on the boat, I just prayed and I prayed," says Basyariah. "We thanked God the boat saved us, but even the boat wasn't stable because it was full of water, so we just held on." They found themselves helpless as the buildings around them collapsed, with people still inside. "There was nothing we could do," says Basyariah, wiping away tears. "Although it's been 10 years since the tsunami, when I talk about it, it feels like yesterday.
I feel so sad - I'll never forget it." When the rain subsided, Basyariah and her children went to live in a village in the middle of the country called Beurawe, but they always returned to Lampulo to look for their missing loved ones. "I didn't know where my husband was.

And my parents too - they ran away, but they were old and I knew they would find it difficult to escape." He never found them. Basharia was a widow who suddenly had to support five children on her own. While living in a temporary shelter, charities taught new skills - raising fish, sewing and baking cakes. That's when the idea came to sell dried tuna snacks. A year after the tsunami, Basyariah started a fishing business with a loan of 500,000 rupees (US$40). ) - now he has returned to Lampulo, where he supports his family and employs a few women in the village. Outside his house, a few doors down from the boat, women are packing dried fish fried with garlic and onions. The food is called "tuna dry by tsunami" and has a picture of a ship on the label. "We were saved in the boat.
We want to remember that," he says. There are said to be around 15 fishing boats stuck on Lampulo's roofs after the tsunami, but some of them have been removed. Zulfikar, the boat's owner, agreed to leave it as a souvenir, despite having just fixed it and waiting to go fishing on the day of the tsunami. Today, the ship is revered as a kind of Noah's Ark, but it is a daily reminder of what happened. "Everyone is trying to capitalize on the fact that the boat is here," says Basyariah. "Everyone has a different story about how the boat saved them.

Before the year 2004, few people knew what a tsunami was, so when the sea water subsided before the waves arrived, the people ran to catch the fish left in the sand instead of running to higher ground. According to the Unesco report, some of the stories told to children they often ended with a warning: "If there is a big earthquake, and if the sea subsides soon afterwards, hurry to the mountains, because the sea will soon rush to the coast."
