Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. You can get a visa on arrival for 30 days at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents.
There are non-stop night buses from Medan to Banda Aceh with a journey time of 9am to 1pm. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices at Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 in a regular size bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide-seater bus.
Minibuses also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are usually longer. Prices are a bit cheaper than buses. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Madan, an hour's drive, Jakarta, 2 hours 40 minutes' drive, or Singapore, almost 4 hours. There is no bus to the airport anymore. The only way into the city area is by airport taxi, which is fixed at Rp 100,000 (2019).

Once you exit the arrival gate, the taxi counter is on the far left. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Balawan Port near Madan. Accepts ships originating from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when arriving from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can reach Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, locals got used to overcharging, but now stability has returned.
Sample rates are: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus Station - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque – Penayong: Rp 5,000. In the city, usually Rp 10,000 should be enough. You can go on a "tsunami tour" as there are still many ships inland and other monuments dedicated to the Day of Devastation 2004. There are about 65 NGOs operating in Banda Aceh, but they usually do not recruit local non-Indonesian citizens.

At the height of the tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many were non-Muslim religious organizations and their credentials were not renewed by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center. There are also several small souvenir shops selling various local items.
Hermes Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores with a food court, a supermarket and clothing stores. The basis of the Hacha breakfast is nasi gori, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere.
Padang food stalls and restaurants are open in the pristine part of town and there are fruit carts everywhere. There are some nice cafes around Ulee Kareng along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town with relaxing views of the rice fields. In the center you will find three fast food chains A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need in this small town. However, there are a few points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities these days, it's still best not to go out alone after 10pm.
