King Charles' royal role as a father has come under a lot of scrutiny, and a new documentary highlights why - dispelling common stereotypes. Prince William and Prince Harry will make history with their father's coronation on May 6, and National Geographic is releasing special never-before-seen and rare footage ahead of the coronation ceremony.
PEOPLE shares a unique look at Charles: in his own words, following the king from his childhood to the present day. Throughout the research, director Tom Jennings says that King Charles' love for his children was a clear theme. "I was amazed. In '93 and 1994, we got some great pictures of him somewhere in Scotland with his sons, running around in the cricket nest and having fun with his boys. And then we got a lot of interviews with him. . There, it gives a great picture of him as a father. . . . When he heard the expectations
and his children when they grow up, I realized that those words are from the heart," Jennings tells PEOPLE. "I don't think it was dressed up, I think he really meant it. When you see pictures like that, and you know how things have changed, I feel very sad.
