Gift cards are always a popular gift. They are suitable for any occasion, never go out of style and never lose their value. That is, of course, until the store that issued the gift card goes out of business. At this point, customers have several options.
Many simply choose to discard store credits, assuming their money is gone forever. While these consumers are not entirely wrong, there are exceptions. In some cases of bankruptcy or closure, stores may still accept gift cards for full or partial value until they close their doors for good.
When A Store Closes
If a store plans to close its doors, you may be able to use your gift cards before they close for good. Check with the store if they can be redeemed. You may be able to use the entire amount on the gift card or a certain percentage.

In some cases your gift vouchers will not be redeemable at all. It all depends on the store and the reason it is closing. When companies file for bankruptcy, they can only continue to accept gift cards if they ask the bankruptcy court for permission and the court grants it.
Companies that file for bankruptcy may therefore be less likely to honor gift cards than companies that go out of business for other reasons. You still have options even if the store doesn't accept your gift card. In some cases, you can exchange it for a gift card to another store or get a refund.
If all else fails, you can always take the issue to a court or government official. If your card is for a small or local business, ask your state attorney general. The attorney general's office may be able to force a business to honor gift cards.
When A Store Closes
For larger companies, you can file a lawsuit for the amount of your gift card. This requires some understanding of the bankruptcy process. When a company goes bankrupt and closes its doors for good, its assets are sold and the profits used to pay off creditors.
Basically, you would file as a creditor because the company owes you money. Although you may receive a refund, it is unlikely because unsecured creditors, such as gift card holders, have the lowest priority. You will not be paid back unless there is money left over after all other creditors – such as suppliers and trade credit holders – have been paid.
