The December 26, 2004 tsunami in Banda Aceh killed an estimated 150,000 people. Part of the city was permanently flooded. The longstanding conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was resolved by a peace agreement on August 15, 2005.

Since then, the peace process has gone remarkably smoothly. In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected mayor, Irvandi Yusufusuf, was inaugurated. Banda Aceh has a rainforest climate with near-average temperatures. The city has an average annual temperature of 27 °C. However, the city experiences wet and dry seasons, with June through August being the driest months of the year.

Banda Aceh has no true dry months with an average rainfall of less than 60mm. On average, the city receives less than 2000 mm of precipitation per year. Foreigners no longer require a travel permit (photo) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required.

A visa for 30 days can be obtained at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes get a visa at the same time if you fill out all the documents in the afternoon, but this is only for residents of Malaysia. There are night buses with a travel time of 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh.

Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gadja Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rs 110,000 for a standard bus to Rs 200,000 for a bus with wide seats. Minibuses can also take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the trip is usually longer.

The nearest (international) ferry terminal is Belawan port near Medan. Picks up vessels from Batam, Indonesia (general route from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer runs. From the port of Ulhi-lhe, Banda Aceh, you can get to Pulau We and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transport are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibuses).

Padang grocery stores and restaurants are open in an unspoiled part of the city, and fruit carts are everywhere. Around Uli Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town, there are some great coffee shops with soothing rice dishes. In the center you will find three fast food chains: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

Like all travelers, common sense and a good attitude are important in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. While Banda Aceh is currently safer than most European cities, it's best not to venture out alone after 10 pm. Since Sharia law is respected, the consumption of alcohol is forbidden, although it is still possible.

Violation of the local interpretation of Sharia law can lead to physical punishment by the Sharia police and arrest of the offended Muslim. Muslim women are usually required to wear the hijab in public. It is not recommended to wear Western-style swimwear other than sabangs.
