Moravian Book & Gift Shop

For the past 274 years, punters far and wide have flocked to the Moravian Bookstore for its selection of iconic Moravian and Bethlehem themed books and gifts. Inspired by the ministry of Brother Rick Nelson, who spent a year in Lititz in the early 1990s while on sabbatical from his service in Honduras, a small group of mission-minded Lititz community members developed a plan to establish a gift shop.

The store was originally intended to provide a local market for goods made in the mission fields, and eventually all the money needed to keep the store open and stock for distribution to missions each year. With the support and encouragement of the community, space was provided in a room on the west side of the Archives Museum, and the Moravian Mission Gift Shop opened its doors in mid-November 1992. Now, after completing our 27th year, the shop

Hold on. To be a multi-faceted means of ministry at Lititz Moravian Church in Lititz, Pa. A group of about 20 volunteers work together more than 1,000 hours a year to staff the store throughout the year. The regular season: Fridays and Saturdays from March to September, then Thursdays to Saturdays for the three months before the Christmas holidays.

You May Purchase Books, Cds, Anthems At This Location And You May Always Order Items 24/7 On The Mmf Website. You May Pick-Up Or We Will Ship.

One of the volunteers, Sister Wilma Byrd, has been a member of the Gift Shop staff since the beginning. Although the inventory in the early years emphasized crafts from the mission fields, the store staff quickly discovered that what our visitors really wanted were items related to Moravian history, customs and practices.

Today we carry several books from the Inter-Provincial Communication Board, CDs from the Moravian Music Foundation and all kinds of Moravian-themed items, from headphones to dish towels. Many of our handmade items are supplied by talented members of the community. Do you like beeswax candles?

We offer a selection of sizes, including lovefest candles and lantern candles made by our candle making team here in Lititz. And oh, we have stars! Traditional 26-point stars come from four different star makers in different sizes. Then there are paper stars, copper stars, tin stars, tempered glass stars.

We will do our best to find the right stars to take home with you. As a fundraising venture, the Gift Shop is a success. In recent years, we have sent an average of $14,000 per year to missions. For 2018 and 2019 the total was $16,000 per year.

The Gift Shop staff tries to follow a formula for allocating donations where about 20 percent stays in the Lititz/Warwick area, 30 percent for the greater Lancaster County area, and 50 percent for Moravian and related projects around the world. Examples of each include the Lititz Warwick Community Fund and the Power Packs Project (food support program) in Lititz/Warwick, Habitat for Humanity and Water Street Mission (homeless ministry) in Lancaster County, and the mission board World, The Unity.

Women's Desk, and MedNica (supporting the Moravian Clinic in Managua) for global ministries. In total, the Mission Gift Shop has distributed approximately $284,000 in donations since its inception. But fundraising is only part of our story. As our dedicated volunteers have learned, working at the Mission Gift Shop offers many opportunities for outreach, both to our local community and to the many visitors who come through our doors.

Conversations can be informative and inspiring. To answer some of the most common questions - what is Moravian, anyway? Are you a Christian? What is the story of the star? - We have put together a set of small pamphlets, which are arranged in a rack by the door, free for those who ask.

For those looking for the graves of relatives, we maintain a directory of burials in the current Akko Dee and Old Saint Jacob Beit Olam. Information leaflets about upcoming services and other church sponsored events are also available. Interactions with visitors are often as fruitful as sales;

It is a special joy to welcome a Saturday customer who returns for Sunday morning worship. Sharing our faith is one of the joys of volunteering at the store. The Moravian Mission Gift Shop is a source of blessing to those who work there, to the visitors who come to the store or just to talk, and to all those who benefit from the donations that we can send all over the world.

"Glühwein" is a German mulled wine (ours is non-alcoholic), an unpleasant warming agent in many cultures during the dark and cold winter months.

The German word translates directly as 'shining wine' in English. The name is derived from the red hot irons used to heat the wine in the early days. Recipes can include red wine or other juice and juices along with common spices of the season, including citrus, cinnamon, star anise, cloves and vanilla, all sweetened with sugar.
