Besides the need for monastic principles in everyday life, the Trappist monks who call the monastery home surprised me. They are really just regular guys. Men who, though they've traded in life as techies on Wall Street or schoolteachers on Main Street, are still in touch with the world outside the home.

If you have never thought about visiting a monastery before - you should see it in Georgia. Here's everything we learned during our visit to Holy Spirit Convent in Conyers. The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is home to about 35 Trappist monks of all ages who live, work and pray together.

This American monastery is located about 40 minutes east of Atlanta and is adjacent to the Arabian Mountain National Heritage Area. The Heritage Area's PADO walking and cycling trail runs past Convent in Conyers. In addition to the trails, the property has a museum, cafe, visitor center and gift shop.

The 31-mile PATH Trail is a paved trail that also connects Mount Panola with Arabia Mountain, Stonecrest Mall and other stops. It's a landscaped network that takes you past rock formations, wildflower fields, streams and trees. Conyers Convent is a wonderful place for family cycling.

The Monastic Life Heritage Center opened in 2011 and is a visitor experience center. The museum presents the history of the Trappist monks as well as the history of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. It also gives a glimpse into the daily life of the monks.

The main museum is located in a barn that was the first residence for the Trappist monks when they arrived in Conner from Kentucky. The 20-minute video at the beginning is fun, but might be a little too much for kids. However, the rest of the museum is kid-friendly and interactive, with touch screens and flip boards.

Learn how the monks built the abbey by hand and what tools they used. An exhibit talks about uniforms. Surgeons wear scrubs, policemen wear uniforms, athletes wear jerseys, nuns do. I like how they relate the habit to other uniforms that are more familiar to children.

I especially enjoyed how the shows relate to our lives as monks, you realize that even though some people look very different, we are all the same. My favorite part was making the stained glass windows. Monks at the monastery make all the stained glass on site.

After visiting the museum, enjoy a picnic on the beautiful lawn – there's plenty of room to spread out or even throw a football around. Bring your own food or grab a sandwich and drink from the Abbey Cafe. Save some room for some Manke-made porridge!

In season, pick chestnuts from the trees in front of the Abbey. The cafe is cozy and worth visiting just for lunch. Daily mass is held in the Abbey of the Holy Spirit, but even if you're not ready for a service, take a look inside the beautiful hand-crafted chapel.

The monks poured the concrete columns by hand and made all the glass windows. Head behind the church and walk through the bamboo forest that helps feed the pandas at Zoo Atlanta. Save some time to do some shopping in the Abbey Gift Shop. Top the kids up with homemade fudge if needed.

The monks make and sell porridge, biscuits and fruit cakes to support the monastery. The store offers unique items, many sustainably produced in developing countries. For Christians, they have a great selection of nativity scenes. Gardeners will enjoy the garden center and the spectacular display of bonsai trees.

The store has everything you need to start your own bonsai or buy bonsai from the monastery. They offer a shipping option if you can't pick something up at the monastery. In addition to the monastery's heritage center, the monastery offers special events throughout the year.

Further Scripture Reading: Acts 2:14a, 36-41; The First Epistle of St. Peter 2:20b-25; The Bible according to Saint John 10:1-10 This Sunday is usually called "Good Shepherd Sunday", because of the focus of the mass reading, especially the Bible, where Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd.

Elsewhere in the Gospels we hear Jesus use similar images, taken from ordinary and familiar realities of the time. The Lord made his words short and clear to his listeners, mentioning common things like sheep and shepherds. The words of Jesus in the biblical text today are specifically addressed to the religious leaders, called Pharisees, who knew Jesus, listened to him and had regular contact with him.

Jesus' intention in today's Gospel is to give the Pharisees a better sense of who He is and why He is among them. Ultimately, however, the Pharisees did not accept Jesus' testimony. In this Sunday's Bible, the image of the sheep is used by Jesus in contrast to the religious atmosphere of first-century Palestine.

Jesus, as a teacher of a new way, explains that the shepherds of the flock of sheep are very important to keep them away from predators. Our monastery of Christ in the desert now has nineteen sheep, both mothers and lambs, young and old, and it is important for us to protect the defenseless sheep around the clock.
