Mission Bell - San Diego de Alcala (San Diego) (Type 1) Mission Bell - San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo (Carmelo) (Type 2) At the same time the American colonies were rebelling against the British, the minority Spanish and Mexicans established settlements on the California coast
The first was founded in 1769 in San Diego, when they established a fort and a Franciscan mission. A footpath called El Camino Real, or The Kings Highway, was built to connect the pillars. Each station, called a Mission, was located in areas where there were large numbers of Indians and where the soil was fertile enough to support a village.
As time went on and more missions were built, the trail became a public road for horses and wagons. However, it wasn't until the last Sonoma mission was completed in 1823 that this little road became a real road. Since then, some small self-care missions have been established.
