Miccosukee Indian Village Gift Shop - Just west of the break to Shark Valley, this 'Indian Village' is an educational outdoor museum that showcases Miccosukee culture through guided tours of traditional homes, a craft gift shop, exhibits of ' dancing and music, and an airboat ride ($20 extra) in a village of hammock-cum-lifted boats (wooden platforms built above the water line) shacks.

There is also an alligator 'wrestling' show. Thankfully this is more respectful than it seems, and a more natural display of this iconic reptile. Handmade arts and crafts from the on-site art gallery make good souvenirs. There is a rather unattractive restaurant on site if you are hungry.

It's that special time of year in Miami: a hint of fresh air breaks through the wall of humidity, turkey vultures migrating north glide in a vicious circle around Brickell, and the plates license plates start to change colors on the highway. Yes, it's fall in Miami.

And while the rest of the country goes apple picking and searching for the Great Pumpkin, the shift to cooler temperatures means it's time for our annual family tradition: a trip to the Everglades of Florida. We usually make it all the way to Shark Valley, but this year we missed the turn and ended up about 150 feet further down the Tamiami Trail, to a Miami gem that will now become a new tradition for us.
The Miccosukee Indian Village celebrates how the Miccosukee Indian Tribe lived and still lives in 'The Heart of the Florida Everglades.''We started our visit with an alligator wrestling show led by Reptile Riff which totally blew our kids away . He was a real showman and left us all on the edge of our seats as he dissected the huge reptile and explained the relationship of the Miccosukee to the alligator in the Everglades.
Only slightly more miraculous than the fact that he still had all his appendages at the end of the show was the fact that he immediately took on the role of tour guide. Riff led us through the Indian Village to meet the talented resident artisans who display their talents in various Miccosukee chick shacks around the grounds.

We learned about traditional art techniques demonstrated not only by the Miccosukee, but by other Native American tribes including wood carving, Navajo beadwork and silverwork, and Mayan beadwork. Our favorite chicken hut to visit was the cooking chicken where we learned that the fire goes 24/7 in a traditional hut.
Our host shared amazing fresh fried bread that she cooked and explained the importance of cooking chicken in Miccosukee culture today. You may have noticed a group of thatched pavilions when you drive down from Tamaimi. Apparently those are some of the cooking or sleeping chicks that are such a central part of Miccosukee family life.

She also told us about the beautiful Miccosukee fire skirt she was wearing, handmade by her grandmother, which uses quilting to tell a story. We learned how the Miccosukee are taught to look at the world with kindness and to consider what you can do as an individual to make the world a better place.
With the day after Thanksgiving being Native American Heritage Day, it's the perfect opportunity to learn about the rich heritage of the Miccosukee, just a short drive from Miami. All rights reserved. Great place to visit, buy many items. They have the largest stock of souvenirs and t-shirts in the area. There is also an Indian village that shows the backward way of life. Friendly and helpful staff on hand. Across the street is where you can take an airboat ride to a village in the marshland.
This is worth seeing. Don't miss it even if you are in the area. An entertaining gator wrestling show, and interesting displays of Indian crafts and life. Spend a few hours. Their story of hiding from the Feds and defeating them, along with the commitment to maintain traditional ways is a fascinating story.
A beautiful place for children and families who want to have a first encounter with the Everglades, its animals, its history and its Tribes. The Gator Wrestlers are fun and the museum is organized and interesting. They have indoor ponds that overlook ponds where you can have a very close (but safe) encounter with gators of all sizes and turtles.

There is also a supplementary trail for a short walking experience and small stations where the natives teach how they have been living in this wonderful area for centuries (clothing, food, traditions, etc.). There is also an airboat ride on the other side of the road that they offer with a combo ticket (and a fair price).

It's halfway between Alligator Alley miamitrail it's not the casino you don't get spiral parking it's pretty easy walk over the pedestrian bridge alligator symbol with the lumberjack the museum itself for $15 if only $12 head is your law enforcement or trooper or higher.
