Metro Gift Card - First, get rid of the payphones around New York, and now it's the last days of the infamous MetroCard machines. The machines that have been in every subway station in New York since 1999 will disappear after this year. According to a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) tweet, "In the not-too-distant future, MetroCard machines will be phased out and replaced by OMNY vending machines."

As a way of phasing out MetroCards in 2019, a New York subway known as OMNY was installed at subway stations and buses. With this contactless fare payment system, commuters simply need to present a credit or debit card, wearable device or smartphone at subway turnstiles, AutoGates and buses.

The service is currently available at 472 subway stations and all MTA buses in the five boroughs. According to OMNY, "over the next few months we plan to support expanded subway, bus, paratransit and commuter rail fare options." The MTA plans to phase out MetroCards and MetroCard devices by the end of 2023.

Many people wonder what will happen to people without a bank account and without a smartphone. The solution is to purchase an OMNY card which can be found at stores such as CVS and Walgreens.
