Banda Aceh has a subtropical climate with an almost constant average temperature. The city has an average annual temperature of 27°C. However, the city experiences wetter and drier seasons, with June to August being the driest season of the year.
Banda Aceh does not have a true dry month, with an average of less than 60mm of precipitation. The city receives an average of 2,000 mm of precipitation annually. Foreigners no longer need a Travel Permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required.

It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa upon arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process a visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork by noon, although this is believed to only apply to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop night buses from Medan to Banda Aceh for 9-13 hours. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices in Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from 110,000 rupees on a regular bus to 200,000 rupees on a wide-seat bus.
Minibuses can also take you from the Banda Aceh Medan area, but the trips are generally longer. Fares are slightly cheaper than buses. It is also possible to travel from Medan via Banda Aceh Kutachane and Takengon. This will be a total of 20 hours.
Airlines fly daily to Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hour flight, to Jakarta, a 2-40-minute flight, or to Singapore, about 4 hours. There is no bus serving the airport anymore. The only way to town is by airport taxi, which costs 100,000 rupees (2019). The taxi counter is located on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate.

The visa procedures at this airport are similar to those at other Indonesian immigration portals. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. Accepts ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route when arriving from Singapore). The ferry from Penang is no longer running.
From Ulhei-lhe, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main ways to get around are becak (motorcycle taxi) and lap-lapi (public minibus). Locals used to be overcharged by the sudden influx of cash after the tsunami, but now stability is back.

There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center.
There are also small souvenir shops selling various local products. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the city center of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has more than 100 stores with food courts, supermarkets and clothing stores. The breakfast staple in Aceh is nasi goreh, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere.
Food stalls and Padang restaurants are open in the pristine part of town, and fruit carts are everywhere. Around Ule Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town, there are some cute cafes with cozy rice paddies. Three fast food chains can be found downtown: A&W, KFC, and Pizza Hut.

As with all excursions, all you need is common sense and good manners in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer today than most European cities, it is best not to go out on your own after 22:00.

Due to the implementation of Islamic law, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible. Violations of locally perceived interpretations of Sharia law can lead to arrest by the Sharia police, with corporal punishment and public ridicule applied to the offending Muslim. Muslim women are usually required to wear a headscarf in public.
