On September 6, 1622, a heavily laden treasure galleon of King Philip IV's Tierra Firma fleet struck a reef and sank in a raging storm off the Florida Keys. All attempts to locate the wreck were unsuccessful until Mel Fisher and Treasure Salvors, Inc. they did not determine the location of the primary cultural deposit on July 20, 1985. Nuestra Senora de Atocha yielded more than 200,000 hand-stamped silver coins in Potosi, Lima, and Mexico City.
Silver coins are called "pieces of eight" and are measured in reals. Their denominations are 8 reales, 4 reales, 2 reales, 1 reale, ½ reale and ¼ reale. The 8-real Atocha silver coin was roughly equivalent to one month's wages for a sailor in the 1600s.
Due to the rough manual minting process, no two coins are alike. Protect your investment when you buy directly from the discoverers of the wrecks of the Atocha and Margarita, Mel Fisher's Treasure. Every Atocha or Margarita shipwreck artifact found by our divers and sold in our official Mel Fisher webstore is guaranteed by us to be authentic and comes with our highly secure Certificate of Authenticity.

23 per person? It's worth the trip. The museum is not big, but it will be informative. I'm not sure about the Harry Potter connection, but the exhibit about the slave ships that stopped in Key West just before the Civil War is an important part of our history.
When you visitthis kind of museum, you don't want to spend the usual 50 dollars on souvenirs, you think you really want to have a piece of Atocha and for only 1k plus you can buy a coin. I was ready to shell out 3k for a nice coin until the seller told me.
coins grow 5-10% per year." As an amateur numismatist, this is mostly not the case, and you buy coins for the love of collecting. Find me any investment that grows 5-10 a year, and I'll quit my full-time job today. We saw some nice coins from ATOCHA and I was willing to drop 3k for Reales of 8, which was considered the nicest possible at level 1. ATOCHA has its own grading system from 1 to 4, in descending order.

Of course, we checked a little and the secondary market has a lot of them at much lower prices. One dealer even told me that the Fisher Museum buys back these coins at lower prices and marks them up. There are more than 90 thousand Atocha coins that have been sold or given to investors since 1986 or so.
In addition, unfortunately, there are many fakes on the market, some of which were labeled as genuine by Mel in 1998. I doubt the museum will sell you a fake coin on purpose, but with all these problems, friends, I decided to let Atocha remain just a part of my memory!
Don't be disappointed by the missed expectations: this museum has the treasures of Atocha and how Mel Fisher found them AND an upper floor devoted to the "science behind the magic" of Harry Potter. You'll want to spend about 60-90 minutes here. I enjoy small museums because you get a better depth of material and don't feel overwhelmed or rushed.
I found Mel Fisher fascinating. The museum was missing something that I can't identify. Maybe I was expecting to see more treasures and artifacts that just weren't there. I believe the gift shop contained more treasures than the museum. To give people value for money they had a special Harry Potter attraction which I thought was a waste of time.
This museum depicts the rescue of the Atocha treasures. The silver bars, gems and other items from this wreck are incredible. Mel Fisher's Great Shrine. But as a museum it was lacking. I'd like to continue for free... They have some treasure displays like you've never seen before.

The "shop" offers some real treasures, so bring your wallet if you want to take something home. When you think of Key West, it's shipwrecks and treasure. Most of the early settlers were mountaineers and made a very, very good living. With this in mind, I got to see some of the artifacts from the most famous shipwrecks and treasure finds ever.
It was very informative and just amazing to see artifacts that have such a historical past. Yes, it is small and commercial. however, it still offers a rare pair of incredible finds. My wife, a Harry Potter nerd, and the kids really enjoyed the Harry Potter exhibit.
For me it was just a bonus to the real treasure. This is the version of our website intended for English speakers in the United States. If you are a resident of another country or region, select the appropriate version of Tripadvisor for your country or region from the drop-down menu.
