In fact, they banned her from making matches, so for many years, Sara was secretly using matches for couples and making love matches. 1994: Sara's granddaughter, Abby, is a successful divorce attorney in New York City, and when her lover's grandmother dies, Abby is given a diary that records all of her games.
Abby finds more questions than answers in the boxes, and now she must decide if she is destined to do more than help others solve love games. This is one of those dual timeline books where I enjoy both timelines equally. I was very interested in Sara and how she used her matching gift, but I was equally drawn to Abby as she struggled to figure out what she really wanted to do.

life I especially enjoyed learning about the Jewish tradition of matchmaking in the early 20th century, and the setting was clearly laid out, both early 20th century New York and modern day New York. But I especially enjoyed learning more about early Jewish culture and traditions.
I also love the relationship between Abby and her grandmother, and it's clear that they are two together. Both are heroes and have compassion for others. I love how Abby changes her view of love throughout the book, as well as how her comments and conversations with her grandmother come back to her at key moments along the way.
I highly recommend Matchmaker's Gift to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. I received a free copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. As you know, I'm not a fan of romance books, but this one looks really interesting - the dual timeline & Jewish customs seem to have some depth to the story.
Great review Wendy. Some interesting reflections on history and how it moved to the present day. Yes, I think in the past people needed more matchmakers, but not more. I will definitely add this to my TBR! It's interesting and I've been busy with a book about two women who founded the Marriage Bureau during World War II.
That was a very good read. Now I might be a bit obsessed with matchmakers for a while... Thanks for sharing Matchmaker's Gift, I'll keep an eye out! I like books about spies. I recently read Mr. Perfect on Paper Jean Meltzer and it is also about matchmakers.
In theory, I think that matching is interesting. I'm not sure I want someone telling me who to marry, but it would be nice to get some help finding one. I was curious to know how Sara went from performer to divorce lawyer. Great review!
