This gift card purchase was documented by a Walmart manager on behalf of Caroline Horn of Hardee's. I noticed that three $100 cards were worthless by the time the gift recipient tried to use them. Carolyn Horn was holiday shopping in December when she stopped at a Walmart at US 460 in Bonsac.
There, using a Visa credit card issued by Wells Fargo Bank, Hardy's grandmother purchased three Walmart-branded gift cards and charged $100 on each. Given the service fee on each card, the transaction totaled $316.32. Later, for Christmas, Horn gives one card to her son, another to her daughter, and a third to her daughter.
The cards, which had the Walmart logo on the front, were not used until February 4, when Horn's son tried to use his gift card to pay for a meal at a local restaurant. Visa declined the transaction because the balance on the card was 5 cents instead of $100.
Realizing the card was no good, Horn calls her and her daughter and warns them that there might be something in the unused gift cards. These fears were justified. When each woman checked the scale, they found it to be zero. Additional investigation by Horn and Visa revealed a $99.95 transaction on a Son of Horn card on January 23 at a Harris Teeter store in Charlotte, North Carolina.
