The city of Banda Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra was closest to the epicenter of the powerful earthquake, with the first waves arriving in just 20 minutes. It is impossible to imagine the 100-foot-high mountain waters that engulfed a coastal city of 320,000 people and instantly killed more than 100,000 men, women and children.
Buildings stacked like houses of cards, trees and cars were swept away in the oil-black rapids, and virtually no one caught in the flood survived. Thailand was right behind. Waves swept across the Indian Ocean at speeds of up to 500 mph, and an hour and a half later the tsunami reached the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket.

Despite the deadline, locals and tourists alike were caught unaware of their impending doom. Curious beachgoers wandered among the strangely receding waves, chased by the swirling water. About 5,400 people died in Thailand, including 2,000 foreign tourists. An hour later, on the opposite side of the Indian Ocean, waves pounded India's southeast coast near the city of Chennai, pushing debris-choked water kilometers inland, killing more than 10,000 people, mostly women and children.

Vasily Titov is a tsunami researcher and forecaster at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Center for Tsunami Research. He attributes the raw power of the earthquake to the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The earthquake originates from so-called megathrust faults, where heavier oceanic plates subduct under lighter continental plates.

The 2004 earthquake caused a 900-mile-wide rift in the Indian and Australian plates 31 miles below the ocean floor. that wreaked havoc across the Pacific, including one that flattened Hilo, Hawaii, 15 hours after the earthquake. Months after the tsunami waters receded, Titov will never forget the scene of widespread devastation he witnessed in Sumatra." "We took a boat from the middle of the island to Banda Aceh, the worst-hit area, and for hundreds of kilometers it was like someone took an eraser and erased everything under 20 meters," says Titov. "The extent of the destruction was staggering."
