At 7:59 a.m., the 9.1-magnitude earthquake, one of the largest ever recorded, ruptured an underwater fault in the Indian Ocean, sending a massive column of water toward an unknown shore.

The Boxing Day tsunami was the deadliest in history, killing 230,000 people in a matter of hours. The city of Banda Aceh in northern Sumatra was closest to the epicenter, with the first wave arriving in just 20 minutes. It is unimaginable that a 100-foot-tall mountain could have engulfed a coastal city of 320,000 people and killed more than 100,000 men, women, and children instantly.
Buildings, trees and cars folded like a house of cards were swept away by the black rapids of oil, and almost no one survived the flood. Next up was Thailand. Crossing the Indian Ocean at 500 mph, the tsunami reached the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket an hour and a half later.
Despite the loss of time, locals and tourists alike were unaware of the impending doom. Intrigued beachgoers wandered amid the strange receding waves and were chased by swirling walls of water. The death toll in Thailand is nearly 5,400, including 2,000 foreign tourists. An hour later, on the opposite side of the Indian Ocean, waves hit India's southeast coast near the city of Chennai, pushing debris several kilometers into the depths, killing more than 10,000 people, mostly women and children.

Vasily Titov is a researcher and tsunami forecaster at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Center for Tsunami Studies. He attributed the relentless devastation of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami to the powerful effects of the earthquake that caused it. The earthquake occurred at what is known as a megathrust fault, which pulls heavy oceanic plates beneath lighter continental plates.
