Charles I. D. Loff stands proudly on his first hand-built carousel and the first carousel at Coney Island, installed in 1876. He doubts he knows how long it will last. He was only 24 years old. Charles. I. D. Looff (1852-1918) Immigrated to America from Denmark in 1870 at the age of 18 and worked as an engraver in a furniture factory in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York.
Looff also worked part-time as a dance teacher where he met Anna Dolle, whom he married in 1874. Wood chips from the furniture factory, he collected the chips into blocks, carved the blocks into carousel animals . He assembled his hand-carved animals on a carousel to create his first carousel in 1876. A new ride was installed at Vandeveer's Bathing Pavilion at West Sixth Street and Surf Avenue and was Coney Island's first carousel.

Looff opened his own factory at 30 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. He later moved to Crescent Park, Riverside, RI, and then to Long Beach, CA in 1910, although he left the family to continue managing their Rhode Island recreational property. Loff bought property on the Long Beach Pike Recreation Area and built a fun house.

In 1916, Looff, along with his son, Arthur, built the Santa Monica Pier with the Loff Racetrack. Looff would live on the West Coast with amusement parks and carousels until his death in 1918, when a son, Arthur, took over the West Coast operations. The Crescent Park Carousel was built in 1895 by Charles I.D.
Looff, one of the first carousel designers. The Garden Crescent Carousel is nationally recognized as a true masterpiece of wood carving. Originally built as a showcase for potential buyers, it is Looff's largest and most detailed work. The carousel consists of 62 beautifully carved sculptures and four elegant carriages.
General richness of influence was Loff's trademark and the Crescent Park Carousel gives full expression to this spirit. Decorative glass decorations, stained glass, faceted glass jewelry, electric lights, colorful sandwich windows and his original organ music surround the flying trailer to create Looff's "Total Carousel Experience."
Saved in the 1970s by a handful of residents, the Crescent Park Carousel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and Landmarks in 1976. In 1985, the Rhode Island General Assembly declared the Carousel a gem state of American folk art and in 1987, the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, has designated the Carousel as a National Historic Landmark.
