About 150,000 people died in Banda Aceh in the tsunami of December 26, 2004. Parts of the city were permanently flooded. Since then, many charitable organizations have been on hand to help with the rebuilding. The long-standing conflict between the Aceh Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian military (TNI) was resolved for the time being with the peace agreement of August 15, 2005.
Since then, the peace process has gone quite smoothly. In 2006, the state held its first direct and democratic municipal elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, took office. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate with almost constant average temperatures. The annual average temperature of the city is 27 °C.
However, the city experiences more rainy and dry seasons from June to August, which are the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a true dry season month with an average of less than 60mm of rainfall. On average, the city receives a little less than 2000 mm of precipitation per year.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. It is possible to get a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the documents before noon, but this should only be available to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop night buses from Medan to Banda Aceh, with journey times varying between 9-13 hours. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices in Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 on a regular seat bus to Rp 200,000 on a wide seat bus.
Minibuses can also take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journeys are usually longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than buses. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan with a 1-hour journey, a 2-hour and 40-minute journey from Jakarta, or about 4 hours from Singapore. There is no bus service to the airport anymore. The only way into the city area is the airport taxi, priced at Rp 100,000 (2019).

When you exit the arrival gate, the taxi stand is on the left. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to those at other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. Indonesia gets ships from Batam (a common route when coming from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer runs. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transport are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the residents got used to the overload, but now stability has returned.

There are about 65 NGOs operating in Banda Aceh; however, they usually do not recruit non-Indonesians locally. These NGOs include various UN and EU organizations, USNS, Care, Americare, Islamic Relief, International Red Cross and Red Crescent Federation, Australian Red Cross, Turkish Red Crescent, Kuwait Red Crescent, French Red Cross, IMC, IOM, WHO, Japan.

At the peak of the post-tsunami relief efforts there were 850 NGOs, but most of them were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city centre.
There are also small souvenir shops selling a variety of local products. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the city of Banda Aceh. The mall has food court, supermarkets and clothing stores and more than 100 shops. The basis of the Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere.
In the unspoilt part of town, food stalls and padang restaurants are open, and fruit carts are everywhere. There are lovely coffee houses around Ulee Kareng and along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town that offer relaxing paddy views. Three fast food chain restaurants can be found in the center, namely A & W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel, all you need to make a living in this small town is common sense and a good attitude. However, there are a few points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer today than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10pm.

Alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible because Sharia law is enforced. Violations of locally recognized interpretations of Sharia law can result in detention by the Sharia police with corporal punishment and overt mockery imposed on an offended Muslim. Muslim women should normally wear the hijab in public.

After that first trip, he came home with a bag full of cashews, coffee and anything else he could think of to collect and sell more money for the survivors.
