That made Christine immediately suspicious of the nearly $250 worth of gift cards that were included in the envelope. A receipt was included, which makes it look even more real, listing the gift cards from a site called Thoughtful Gift Cards. The gift cards look real and are an obvious credit to online stores like Little Wanderers, Pregnancy Pillow, Custom Snappies, Udder Covers and Canopy Couture.
NewsChannel 9's Andrew Donovan took one of the gift cards and tried to buy $30 worth of baby shoes from LittleWanderers.com. Still $30 in credit left, the site still asked for credit card info to cover the $18 shipping fee. While the scheme isn't necessarily illegal and the online stores sell genuine products, the investigation shows the company makes its money by providing credit but charging more for shipping that the gift cards don't cover.
The same results are consistent with complaints to the Better Business Bureau from customers who were charged more for shipping than if they hadn't used the gift cards. All of the businesses listed on the gift cards are operated by Mothers Lounge, which did not respond to NewsChannel 9's request for comment.
The Better Business Bureau, which is investigating the company, also hasn't heard back after multiple complaints were filed by women across the country.
