Little Mermaid Gift Bags
We stayed mostly near the city, we went to the beach every day. At one point I needed a bag and went to a street vendor. I wanted a vegan backpack and found a bag made raw with such unique designs. I brought the bag home and people stopped me on the street in America to tell me how much they loved my bag.
I found myself once again traveling around Sumatra in a documentary series on natural medicine and healing. One day I stumbled again on the embroidered designs that you can see on Banda Bags now. I absolutely had to know where they came from, so I traveled to the countryside and met the women who created such unique designs.
They were excellent artisans who designed curious and unique hand-embroidered designs and their craft helped me. I knew immediately that I had to start working with these women who seemed to create these designs as if by magic. My search for these magical and unique designs led me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra.
Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
If you've been paying attention to the news for the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this is the country that was hit by the world's worst recorded tsunami. The earthquake that shook this region literally shook the globe off its axis. The ensuing tsunami devastated the region, killing over two hundred thousand people.

I arrived after that disaster, and it's been about a decade. Looking around, I imagined that this had happened only a week ago. I couldn't believe that this is where these beautiful embroidered patterns were born. One day I had the idea that I can bring these unique designs to the world and help those women who are stuck in a situation that has not improved for years.
This suburban area had very little opportunity to revive its economy, but they had something that I knew the world would appreciate. Together, we created a vegan and cruelty-free bag that could grace the runway as well as the checkout line. The weekend bag was born.
Shortly after a weekend of designing, we found the Nano. This is a vegan leather bag that really makes a statement. Then we designed a vegan backpack that anyone can wear. The vegan backpack is beautiful and just the right size to hold all your essentials.
A Second Run-In
The bag is a unique design that we came up with because we hadn't seen anything like it. There is nothing else like it yet. Our vegan wallets take on a familiar shape, but the designs are totally Banda. We're always mindful and playing with new ideas and want to be one of the most innovative vegan fashion and cruelty-free bag companies on the planet.
Banda Bags have helped increase economic opportunities for people affected by the tsunami. When I founded Banda Bags, I built a company foundation to pay a fair wage and ensure the safety and well-being of artisans. I also wanted a durable, cruelty-free bag. The weekend bag and all our styles are made from the highest quality vegan leather.

Banda Bags does not use any animal products, making our bags 100% vegan friendly. Our vegan leather bags are made from hand-picked materials that we strive to constantly renew. We are currently looking at all ways to make our bags more environmentally friendly. This means providing more materials with recycled content and seeking innovation in production.
There are all kinds of cool materials that could one day replace the vegan leather we use today. We are talking about materials produced from all natural sources, including pineapple. We're even looking at ways to make yarn out of ocean plastic! I correctly thought that people would love the unique designs found in Indonesia.
The Ravages Of A Tsunami
From the first days of working in their remote village with the artisans until now, a lot has happened. The 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition gave all the models a weekend bag of goodies. If you read Us Weekly, you may have seen the Banda Bag!

Banda Bags Are Born
The earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck the coast of Southeast Asia the day after Christmas 2004 reportedly killed more than 285,000 people, 185,000 of whom died in the Aceh province of Sumatra, Indonesia. alone. Homes and loved ones were swept away by the water.
In Orange, California, day trader Roy van Broekhuizen called from Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, and asked if he would lead tsunami relief teams to help in Indonesia. Roy arrived with his first team of volunteers from the church a few weeks after the disaster.
The memories of dead bodies, destruction, chaos, disaster, helplessness and more remain in his mind forever. That first trip to Banda Aceh changed Roy's life forever, crying over corpses, bandaging the wounded and working with people to rebuild shattered lives. After the first trip, he returned home with his suitcase full of cashews, coffee and anything else he could think of to sell and raise more money for these survivors.
Honey, I have to go back. I have to go back." It was during Roy's trip to Banda Aceh in June 2005 that Louise decided to quit her job and join Roy in relief work. Amid the chaos and destruction, Roy and Louise worked together to bring relief wherever and however they could.
