Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. You can get a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before 5pm.

There are non-stop night buses, with a travel time of 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices at Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. Prices vary from Rp 110,000 in regular size buses to Rp 200,000 in wide seat buses.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journey is usually longer. The price is a little cheaper than the bus. You can also cross Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. This will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and either Medan, a 1 hour journey, Jakarta, a 2-40 minute journey, or Singapore, almost 4 hours. There are no more buses serving the airport. The only way to get to the city area is by airport taxi, which is set at Rp 100,000 (2019).

The taxi counter is on the far left when you exit the arrivals gate. The visa formalities at this airport are the same as other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. It accepts ships originating from Batam, Indonesia (normal route when coming from Singapore).
Ferries from Penang no longer operate. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and to Pulau Aceh. The main methods of getting around are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibuses). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, local residents had become accustomed to overcharges, but now stabilization has returned.

At the height of post-tsunami relief efforts, there were 850 NGOs, but most were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government. There is an interesting fish, meat and vegetable market in the center of town.
There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local items. Hermes Palace shopping center is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The mall has over 100 stores with a food court, a supermarket and a clothing store. Acehnese breakfast is savory rice, cooked rice with coconut milk, which is sold in coffee shops everywhere.
Padang food stalls and restaurants are open all over the unspoilt part of town and fruit carts are everywhere. There are some interesting coffee shops with rice paddy views around the relaxing Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town. Three fast food chain restaurants can be found downtown, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to get along in this small town. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Although today Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities, it is better not to go out alone after 10:00.
