I was looking for a vegan bag and I found a bag with these unique patterns. I brought the bag home with me, and people stopped me on the street in America to tell me how much they liked my bag. I found myself traveling to Sumatra again and filming a documentary about natural remedies and healing.
One day, I came across the embroidered pattern you see on bags again. I had to find out exactly where they came from, so I went to the countryside and met the women who created such unique designs. They were wonderful craftsmen who designed amazing and unique hand embroidery designs, and their craftsmanship inspired me.
I knew immediately that I had to start a collaboration with these women who seem to create these designs like magic. My search for this magical and unique design led me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra. If you've been paying attention to the news in the last fifteen years or so, you'll remember that this is where the world's worst tsunami was recorded.

Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
The earthquake that shook this region shook the earth off its axis, literally. The ensuing tsunami devastated the area and killed more than two hundred thousand people. I came because of this accident, which was ten years after it happened. Looking around, I could only imagine that it had happened a week ago.
I can't believe this is where these beautiful embroidery patterns were born. One day the idea came to me that I could bring these special designs to the world and help these women stay unimproved for years. This remote area had very little opportunity to revive its economy, but they had something I knew the world would appreciate.
We worked together to design a cruelty-free vegan bag to grace the airport and check-in line. The weekend bag was born. After a weekend of design, we soon got to the Nano. It's a vegan leather bag that really makes a statement. Then we developed a vegan bag that anyone could carry.
The vegan bag is cute and the perfect size to carry all your essentials. The shell bag is a unique design that we came up with, because we haven't seen anything like it. Still nothing else. Our vegan wallets have common shapes, but the designs are completely unique.

A Second Run-In
We're always playing with new ideas and want to be one of the most innovative cruelty-free vegan fashion and handbag companies on the planet. Banda bags helped increase the economic opportunities of those affected by the tsunami. When I started Banda Bags, I made it the foundation of the company to pay fair wages and ensure the safety and security of artisans.
Also, I wanted a bag that was durable and cruelty-free. The weekend bag and all our styles are made from high quality vegan leather. Banda Bags do not use any animal products, making our bags 100% vegan friendly. Our vegan leather bags are handcrafted from hand-picked materials that we strive to update regularly.
We are now looking at all ways to make our bags more environmentally sustainable. This means looking for materials with a high level of recycled content and striving for innovation in production. There are all kinds of cool materials that could one day replace the vegan leather we use today.
These are materials from all natural sources, including pineapple. We're even looking into ways to make yarn out of ocean plastic! I was right when I assumed that people would love the unique designs I found in Indonesia. From the first days of working with artisans in their remote villages to today, much has been achieved.
