Leave your own tip. Los Angeles is known, among other things, for the unique and the bizarre. This gift shop belongs in this city. All the usual gift shops can be found here (clothing, magnets, doormats, even a Christmas ornament that doubles as a solar collector!).
The selection and the gift shop itself is small. But if you're looking for that unique gift, look no further. Whatever you choose, it's sure to be a conversation starter. Or end a conversation. Also, don't leave without checking out and sitting on the super cool coffin couch shown!
You definitely need a morbid twist to even stay here. But I thought everyone was very nice inside and they had a good sense of humor about it all. I even met the coroner who took me and my friend into the back rooms for a disturbing-yet-fantastic view of what goes on there (not for the faint of heart).

grim? While you identify the mortal remains of your dearly departed, why not pick up a souvenir or two? They have t-shirts, golf balls and door mats emblazoned with a corpse in chalk, dry cleaners bags that simulate body bags, even a children's corner (or is it children's coroner?).
My only problem is the lack of mention of Quincy, TV's crusading doctor in L.A. I would have happily spent a few bucks on anything with Jack Klugman's face on it. The gift shop may be tacky, but the profits fund a program to educate young people about the dangers of drunk driving.
I just took a group of 8 high school kids on a 3 day "Roadside America" excursion based on your website and tips page. Our route was from San Francisco down the 101 to Los Angeles, then up the 14 to Route 5 through Tehachapi back to SF.

We are planning to make our own website and then I will write to you again so you can see our pictures and stories, but I specifically wanted to write to you about how upset I am about the Los Angeles Coroners Office Gift Shop.
I don't think it should be promoted by this site. The gift shop does not open until 14.00, so we waited in the lobby. What we didn't expect was to share the same lobby with people who had just identified the remains of their loved ones.

A woman passed out while her child was crying, all while my students and I sat there waiting to enter the gift shop. The whole trip suddenly seemed very insensitive and in bad taste. The office should AT LEAST have a separate entrance if they are going to continue to offer this shady shopping experience.
The LA County Coroner's Office has a macabre little gift shop called "Skeletons in the Closet" where they sell all kinds of goodies with the coroner's logo (t-shirts, mugs, coin banks). They also have great beach towels with a chalk outline and key chains with toe marks (which they will personalize with your name).

A gruesome journey into the lighter side of dying, this gift shop is for those with a keen sense of mortality and a greater sense of humor. As mentioned above, you literally roll up to the LA Coroner's office to get into the store, and it's pretty inconvenient when you first arrive.

Unsure if the store ACTUALLY found me inside the coroner's office, I sheepishly walked into the main building, looking like a tourist with my camera, and passed a group of people who seemed to be there for legitimate reasons (ie. to identify a dead body, presumably a loved one ).
After composing myself, I ran around and finally saw it – a small door tucked in the corner with the name "Gift Shop" written on it. Let the games begin. Fans of the macabre will have a field day here as they have a wide range of corpse-related goods for sale.
We're talking chalk-outline clothing swag, police tape party favors, plastic skeletons, body bags and teddy bears (aka Freddy the Forensic Bear) that lovingly say "LA Coroner Medical Examiner" on the front. The store is small but pretty epic and very nicely organized. First, I found great joy in the chalk outline beach towel, which I was told is the store's number 1 seller.
The woman behind the counter, Edna, was lovely and chatty. A wily 10+ year veteran of the shop, she taught me the history of the shop and laughed at the reactions she has received from the customers who have dropped in over the years. She also runs the online store, which seems to be doing pretty solid business.
