On average, the city receives a little less than 2000 mm of precipitation per year. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa can be obtained upon arrival at Banda Aceh Airport.

The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes issue a visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this only applies to Malaysian residents. There are non-stop night buses, travel time from 9 to 13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh.
Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gaja Mada, Medan. The price varies from 110,000 rupiah in a normal size bus to 200,000 rupiah in a bus with wide seats. Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys usually take longer.
Prices are slightly cheaper than on buses. You can also travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutakane and Takengon. In total, it will be 20 hours. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan (1 hour journey), Jakarta (2 hours 40 minutes) or Singapore (almost 4 hours).

There is no longer a bus that serves the airport. The only way into the city area is by taxi to the airport, which costs 100,000 rupiah (2019). The taxi rank is on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa formalities at this airport are the same as at other immigration ports in Indonesia.
The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. It accepts ships departing from Batam, Indonesia (regular route from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh.

The main means of transportation are bechak (mototaxi) and labi-labi (minibus). The sudden influx of money after the tsunami got locals used to inflated prices, but now stabilization has returned. Padang food stalls and restaurants are open all over the pristine part of town and fruit carts are everywhere. Around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town, there are some nice cafes with soothing views of the rice paddies. Three fast food chains A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut operate in the center.
By Boat[Edit]
As with all travelers, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to get by in this small town. However, it is worth remembering a few points. Although Banda Aceh is now safer than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10pm.
As Sharia law is enforced, alcohol consumption is prohibited, although it is still possible. Violation of the locally adopted interpretation of Sharia law can result in arrest by the Sharia police, with corporal punishment and public ridicule of the offending Muslim. Muslim women are usually required to wear headscarves in public.
