By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. You can apply for a 30-day visa upon arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The Embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process your visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this only applies to Malaysians.

There is a non-stop night bus, with travel time from 9 am to 1 pm - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp. 110,000 in a regular size bus to Rp. 200,000 in a bus with wide seats.
Mini-buses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journey is generally longer. The price is a bit cheaper than on the bus. It may be from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. This will be a total of 20 hours.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a one-hour journey, Jakarta, a 2-40 minute journey, or Singapore, almost 4 hours. There are no more buses going to the airport. Arriving in the city area only by airport taxi which costs IDR 100,000 (2019). The taxi counter is on the left as you exit the front gate.
By Bus[Edit]
The visa formalities at this airport are the same as at other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. Accept ships originating from Batam, Indonesia (regular route if coming from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer works.
From Ulhee-lhee, Banda Aceh Port can go to Weh Island and Aceh Island. The main means of transport are vičak (motor taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus). Because of the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the local people are used to being overcharged, but now stabilization has returned.

At the peak of post-tsunami relief there were 850 NGOs, but many of them were non-Muslim religious organizations and their licenses were not renewed by the Indonesian government. There is an interesting fish, meat and vegetable market in the center of town. There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local items.
Hermes Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has more than 100 shops with restaurants, supermarkets and clothing stores. Aceh's breakfast is savory rice, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in shops everywhere. Padang food stalls and restaurants are open all over the unspoilt city, and fruit carts are everywhere.
There are some nice cafes with views of the rice fields around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of the city. There are three fast food restaurants in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to navigate this small town.

However, there are a few points worth noting. Although Banda Aceh is now safer than European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10:00. Since Sharia law is in effect, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible. Violations of the locally perceived interpretation of Sharia law can lead to arrest by the Sharia police along with physical punishment and public ridicule of the offending Muslim.
