The 26 December 2004 tsunami killed around 150,000 people in Banda Aceh and permanently submerged parts of the city. Since then, many aid agencies have been there to help rebuild. The longstanding conflict between the Aceh Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was resolved for the time being by a peace agreement of 15 August 2005.
Since then, the peace process has been fairly smooth. In 2006, the state held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, Irwandi Yusuf, the first democratically elected governor, was sworn in. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate with average temperatures that are almost constant.
The average annual temperature in the city is 27 °C. However, the city experiences a wetter and drier season, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a truly dry season with an average precipitation of less than 60 millimeters.
By Bus[Edit]
On average, the city receives less than 2000 millimeters of precipitation per year. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesia visa is required. You can get a 30-day visa upon arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The Kuala Lumpur Embassy can process same-day visas if all paperwork is completed before noon, but this only applies to Malaysian residents.

There is a direct night bus from Medan to Banda Aceh with a journey time of 9-13 hours. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka are Jl. We have offices in Gaja Mada, Medan. Prices range from Rp 110,000 for regular seat buses to Rp 200,000 for wide seat buses.
You can also get to Banda Aceh from the Medan area by minibus, but the journey is usually longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than coaches. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. Total 20 hours. The airline operates daily flights between Banda Aceh and Medan (1 hour), Jakarta (2 hours 40 minutes) and Singapore (approximately 4 hours).
There are no more buses to the airport. The only way to reach the city is by airport taxi set at Rp 100,000 (2019). The taxi stand is on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate. The visa process at this airport is similar to other Indonesian immigration gateways.

The nearest large (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. We take the boat from Batam, Indonesia (a common route for people coming from Singapore). Ferries from Penang are no longer in service. You can go to Pulau We and Pulau Aceh from Eulhee-ri, the port of Banda Aceh.
The main modes of transport are Becak (motorcycle taxi) and Rabirabi (public minibus). The sudden influx of money after the tsunami made the locals accustomed to overcharging, but now they have settled down. Grand Mosque - Penayong: Rp 5,000. Within the city, Rp 10,000 is usually sufficient. You can take a "tsunami tour" as there are still many boats in the hinterland and a monument commemorating the disastrous day of 2004. About 65 NGOs are active in Banda Aceh.
However, they generally do not recruit non-Indonesians locally. These NGOs include various UN and EU agencies, USNS, Care, Americare, Islamic Relief, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, Australian Red Cross, Turkish Red Crescent, Kuwait Red Crescent, French Red Cross, IMC, IOM, WHO, and Japan.

At the peak of post-tsunami aid, there were 850 NGOs, many of which were non-Muslim religious groups, and the Indonesian government did not extend their permits. The city center has interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets.
There is also a small souvenir shop selling a variety of local products. The Hermes Palace Shopping Mall is located in Banda Aceh city center. The mall has over 100 stores with food courts, supermarkets and clothing stores. An Acehnese breakfast staple is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk sold in cafes around the world.
Padang stalls and restaurants are open throughout the untouched areas of the city, and fruit carts are everywhere. There are nice cafes with relaxing rice field views around Ulee Kareng along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of the city. In the center are three fast food chains: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude will help you get along in this small town. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Today Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities, but it's best not to go out alone after 10pm.

Drinking alcohol is not permitted as Sharia law is in place, but it is still possible. Violations of locally recognized interpretations of Sharia law can result in corporal punishment and public ridicule of offending Muslims leading to arrest by Sharia police. Muslim women are generally required to wear headscarves in public.
