Andrea, from Buffalo, N.Y., had an even more curious experience. After purchasing a $100 gift card for her son, the card had a zero balance.

She says she was told the money was withdrawn as soon as the card was activated and used to register an internet domain. Andrea says the company rejected her request for a refund because someone withdrew the money. In an email to Consumer Affairs on Tuesday, Andrea said the issue still hasn't been resolved.

David, a pastor in Minneapolis, tells us he had a similar experience. After buying two $500 prepaid cards, David said the money went quickly. "One bought $500 on Amazon, the second activated it, and the rest is 0," David wrote in a Consumer Affairs review.

He bought the cards at a speedway store, and when he told the manager, the manager refunded the $990. Almost all customers who recently complained about problems with their cards contacted Vanilla's customer service but found it unresponsive.

Some have been told refunds can take up to 90 days to process. The problem affects customers across the country, not just one geographic area. KPRC-TV in Houston reports that dozens of viewers have complained about problems with cards and a lack of response from credit card issuers.
