Is Temu Free Gift Real - The most free app that can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play in the last two months was not TikTok, YouTube or Instagram, but a shopping app that did not exist four months ago. Temu offers deep discounts on many products, often shipping directly from Chinese factories or warehouses.

Is Temu Free Gift Real

In addition to the extremely low prices, Temu can undoubtedly attribute its popularity to its strategy of offering free content to users who promote the app on their social networks and entice their friends and family to sign up. But the company - the US branch of Chinese e-commerce company Pinduoduo - is also starting to develop a reputation for undelivered packages, mysterious fees, incorrect orders and unresponsive customer service.

Temu already has more than 30 complaints with the Better Business Bureau and has a BBB customer rating of less than 1.5 stars. "They're making delivery promises, and people aren't getting their products when they should have," Melanie McGovern, BBB's director of public relations and social media, told TIME.

When contacted by TIME, the company did not directly respond to questions about consumer complaints or BBB concerns. Temu's business model, if successful, could also have a major impact on US retail and the global supply chain in the coming year. At first glance, Temu may leave some users wondering if it's legit or not.

What Is Temu And How Does It Work?

In addition to premium consumer products, Temu offers you the possibility to earn points by playing round games or by convincing your friends to join you. Over the past two months, posts praising Temu have spread like wildfire across Facebook, Twitter and TikTok, although many of them use words of praise that seem to be recycled from post to post.

But, now, Temu is really a real platform, offering a variety of real products at deep discounts, from air fryers to Lenovo wireless phones ($8.98), computer keyboards ($15) to clothes ( $1.69 for five pairs of socks). Consumers turning to Temu this month as a lifeline for holiday shopping in the face of the highest inflation in a generation have made it one of the fastest-growing destinations in the United States.

The best question is what Temu doesn't sell. Users of Temu's website or app are immediately surrounded by offers of all kinds: running shoes for $17.48, international keys for $4.48, talking toy hamsters for $6.99. Banner boasts items up to 90% off retail price, thanks to a New Year's Eve sale.

The breadth of products and prices are amazing, and the beauty of the place comes across as something like a dollar store. But the strategy makes sense when you realize that Temu is a "sister company" of the Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo, which has been offering the same thing in China for several years.

What Does Temu Sell?

Pinduoduo has succeeded in China selling discounted products directly from manufacturers to low-income people, as well as agricultural products to farmers. The company now has a market cap of $102 billion, and its value has soared in a year that competitors like Alibaba have hit hard.

Pinduoduo launched Temu in September to appeal to the US market, and Temu's website lists an office in downtown Boston. Temu's spokesperson responded to TIME's questions in a statement on its website that the company's value is enabled by "a deep network of merchants, logistics partners and the ecosystem [Pinduoduo] has built over the years".

Even though Temu's price is cheap, many new customers don't pay anything. This is because Temu has started a social media campaign where the more you convince others to sign up, the more credit you will get. This allowed some people who earned enough points to get furniture without even giving Temu their credit card information.

It looks like they're being forced to become a loss leader to gain market share, which is not unlike what Amazon has been doing for a long time," said Douglas Schmidt, a computer science professor at Vanderbilt University. Brianna Lukey, who lives in Fort Worth, Texas, said she received $200 worth of merchandise from Temu.

What Does Temu Sell?

She first heard about the app from her friend a month ago and was initially skeptical: "I know there are a lot of things going around that might not be legal," she said. "But it was." Lukey posted Temu on Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat, eventually convincing his friends to join the app, earning more points in the process.

She used it to order a ring light (valued at $25.48) for her small patchwork business, Array of Aura's, as well as an oil diffuser ($5.48), multiple necklaces and a mouse and keyboard for her daughter ($19.98). Lukey says the keyboard works well: “I didn't expect the quality to be so high.

But it's great to be free, she said. "So, I thank him. Temu may have provided Lukey with many products for free, but the company gets free publicity through Lukey's social network. Temu presents the campaign as a way for communities to come together to save money: their motto is "Team Up, Price Down".

The strategy seems to be working: when Lukey posted a picture of Temu and sent it to Facebook, his post was quickly filled with comments from 70 of his Facebook friends, who are mostly people who post their referral links in the hope of getting results.

The same. One of the comments on Lukey's post, however, was much better than the others. Julie Roper Malloy wrote that the package she ordered from Temu, which included Christmas gifts, never arrived, despite the company's promise that it would be delivered by December 19 at the latest.

Still waiting for my November order! Thanks Temu, you ruined Christmas!" she wrote. In a series of Facebook posts to TIME, Roper Malloy said she spent $178 on gifts Temu gave her family, including two drones and her daughter's makeup. But the items never arrived. Roper Malloy said she contacted the company several times for a refund, which has yet to come. "We will definitely try harder in the future."

when ordering online," she wrote. [Update: After this article was published, Roper Malloy received his Temu order and a refund from the company.] Roper Malloy isn't the only one experiencing issues with Temu order Temu himself has admitted that his orders are longer than Amazon arrivals - usually 7-15 business days - because they come from "outside warehouses". But it looks like Temu also struggled to deliver in that big time window.

In October, the Boston branch of the Better Business Bureau opened a case against Temu and received 31 complaints about the website. Temu currently has a BBB rating of C and an average customer rating of 1.4 out of 5 stars, despite only 20 reviews.
