According to a July survey by Bankrate.com, 51% of American adults have more than $15.3 billion in unused gift cards, coupons and store credits. This equates to an average of $116 per person in gift cards.
A rule of thumb with a gift card? Use it until you lose it. The Federal Trade Commission recommends using your card as soon as possible. It also recommends treating gift cards like cash and using them early to get full value. Another good reason to use cards sooner rather than later is if you risk a store or restaurant closing.
Use Your Christmas Gift Cards Asap
While gift cards are often accepted after companies file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, they quickly become worthless in many cases. Sometimes there is little or no warning of a business closure. "I usually tell people if they have gift cards in their wallet, use them yesterday," Melissa Jacoby, a bankruptcy law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told USA TODAY.
The Bankrate study found that 29% of adults let at least one gift card expire, 27% lost at least one, and 21% lost it because the business closed permanently before they used at least one card. Before entering any information, it's important to go to the actual retailer or card site and make sure you're in the right place.
If you're not careful, you may end up on a site that looks legitimate but may steal your gift card balance, rendering it useless. USA TODAY has compiled sites to check out the most popular gift cards for shops, restaurants and credit cards. This list is current as of December 24.
Another way to check your balance is through store apps, and some retailers like Target allow you to add gift cards to your app wallet. Amazon says you can see the gift card balance in your account. Also, when you apply a gift card to an order or add it to your account for future purchases, the balance will be saved.
Check Gift Card Balances (Carefully)
After logging in to your account, select Gift Cards and check your gift card balance. According to Epic Games, an Epic Games account is required to redeem a V-Bucks card code. Cards can be activated at Epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/vbuckscard. According to Oculus, if you get a store credit, you can check your balance in the Oculus app settings.
To use credit, you must add a payment method to your account. Find out more about PlayStation gift cards and how to redeem them at Playstation.com/en-us/playstation-gift-cards. According to Roblox, gift cards can only be activated in the browser and "cannot be activated in Roblox apps."
