Instagram Gift Message - Instagram direct messages (DM) can be confusing at times, especially if you're new to it. You'll find a number of icons in Instagram chat that can feel a bit overwhelming. We can understand that we can worry about hitting a symbol without knowing its effect.
Instagram Gift Message
Don't worry. We have covered all Instagram direct message symbols along with their meanings here. We start with the icons that appear in the chat list and continue with the symbols that appear in an individual chat. When you open Instagram Direct Messages, you will find the pencil icon at the top.
By tapping this icon, you can create a new message. For example, if you don't have an existing chat thread with someone and you want to send them a message, tap this icon and select the person you want to start a conversation with. Next to the new message icon, you have the video chat icon.
This Instagram message icon lets you start a video chat with the person you can select on the next screen. You will also find the same icon in an individual chat thread. Use it to make a video call to that person or group if it's a group chat.
Writing Or Pencil Icon
For Instagram business accounts, you may find the multiple choice icon instead of the video chat icon. Tap on it to select multiple chats and choose an action to take like delete, mute, flag etc. If you use multiple Instagram accounts, you may notice a red dot next to your Instagram username in the DM.
It means that some other Instagram account has unread notifications. If you tap on the username, you can easily switch between multiple accounts directly from the chat list. Next to all available chats in the chat list, you have the disappearing messages icon. It's a feature available in Instagram Direct Messages, which as the name suggests lets you send disappearing photos and videos.
Pressing it will open the camera. Take a photo or choose one from your gallery. You can edit the image by adding filters, effects, text and doodles. When you take a photo or select it from the gallery, you get three options at the bottom: Show Once, Allow Playback, and Keep In Chat.
When the first option is selected, the recipient of the message can only view the image or video once. After viewing the message, it automatically disappears and cannot be opened by either party. Allow replay allows the recipient to view the message twice, after which it cannot be opened.
Writing Or Pencil Icon
Finally, the message sent via Keep in chat mode will remain in the chat forever until you delete or restore it. The same icon is also in the chat. You'll find it on the left side of the writing area. When someone sends you a disappearing message, you'll see the message Show photo in your chat.
When someone on your chat list is online, you'll see a green dot on their profile picture in Instagram messages. The green dot appears due to activity status feature. You can enable or disable it in your account by going to "Instagram Settings -> Privacy -> Activity Status".
When you mute someone's Instagram messages, you'll see the mute icon (speaker with a slash) next to their name in your chat list. To mute a person, open the chat thread and tap the person's name. Turn off the switch next to Turn off notifications.
Open an Instagram chat thread and you'll get the phone or call icon at the top. Use it to call the user or make a group call. As mentioned above, you also get the video call icon in a chat. At the bottom of the chat there are many message icons.
Video Chat Icon
Use the microphone icon next to the writing area to send an audio message. Press and hold the microphone button to start recording a message. Tap the gallery icon to view photos and videos available on your phone. Select an item to send to the user.
You will also find the sticker icon in Instagram chats. Tap it to select a sticker or GIF. Use them in your chats to make them interesting. Interestingly, when you start typing, the camera icon turns into a search icon. Click on it and Instagram will show you the appropriate GIFs and stickers based on the text message contained in the box.
If you like an Instagram message, you can react to it with emojis. The default emoji is the red heart icon. It will appear below the message. If you want to choose a different emoji, press and hold the message. If you have a business account, you will see the instant chat icon in your chats.

Use it to send saved responses to your customers. If disappear mode is enabled for a chat, you will see its icon next to the chat in the chat list. Vanish mode is a weird notification feature. When enabled, sent and received messages will automatically disappear from the chat thread when you close the chat.
