Gift cards, seasonal items, consignment items, calendars, used, worn, food, furniture and luggage display items are non-refundable. In 1903, Henry E. Huntington (1850-1927) purchased the San Marino Ranch, a working ranch about 12 miles from downtown Los Angeles with citrus groves, nut and fruit orchards, alfalfa cultivation, a small herd of dairy cows, and poultry.

Its supervisor, William Hertrich (1878-1966), played a major role in developing the diverse botanical collections that formed the foundation of the Huntington Arboretum. The property, originally covering nearly 600 hectares, currently covers 207 hectares, of which 130 hectares can be visited. "If you can believe it, there are over 83,000 living plants here. The Arboretum is the entrance to the Huntington Museum and connects all three collections: Art Collection, Library Collection, and Plant Collection."

In addition to 130 acres of themed gardens, the Huntington also has an extensive collection of live plants, including orchids, cycads, and bonsai, examples of which can be found throughout. These core collections are preserved, expanded, studied and promoted to the public and support many areas of botanical research, including conservation and cryopreservation.

The collections also serve as the foundation for the Huntington's educational programs, including botanical lectures, horticultural workshops and demonstrations, and plant sales. Dr. Lei Xue of Oregon State University discusses the calligraphic flagstones often found in Chinese gardens. These stones were once used to make ink rubs called fatie, which were used as copy books by calligraphers.

This winter's heavy rains make drought seem remote, if not unlikely. To be sure, record rainfall will alleviate short-term drought, but long-term water supply challenges remain in our region. Water usage at The Huntington is regularly monitored and sustainability and conservation remain a high priority.

The Huntington Arboretum Herbarium (HNT) was founded in the 1960s by Myron Kimnach, who served as curator of the Arboretum from 1962 to 1986. It mainly houses exotic plant specimens for research and educational purposes. These specimens are intended as documentation for research projects and as a source of botanical identification.

The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Garden will open a massive new facility in the fall of 2023 in its famous Japanese Garden, a reconstruction of a 320-year-old judicial (shōya) residence in Marugame, Japan. It was named the Japanese heritage. Shōya House, a 3,000 square meter residence, was built around 1700 and is the center of country life.

Although not modeled after a specific garden, it follows centuries-old guidelines in Suzhou, China. Part of these traditions is the preservation of content on already selected sites.
