To activate a gift card, start by looking for the activation sticker on the front of the card. If you don't see this sticker or something similar on your card, it doesn't need to be activated. Next, find the ID number, activation code, and/or PIN number on the sticker.

How do retailers restrict redemptions for gift cards, or those prepaid phone/debit cards? They need to set up a system to prevent you from calling unknown cards through the register, and I think there is a standard solution built into the ERP/accounting systems. This may include web services or EDI.
How Can I Activate My Gift Card Without A Cashier?
I ask all this because one of my clients wants to develop a product that you can enter by purchasing a $30 card at the grocery store. The card has a unique number. When you buy a card and activate it through the website, coupons for restaurants and the like will be emailed to you at any time.
However, if someone steals a set of cards or discovers the numbering process, we don't want the cards to work. Perhaps, this is a problem because customers are dealing with above products (prepaid phone cards, etc.). I can think of many ways to solve this problem, but I have to give a "normal" solution that customers expect, so that the product can hit their business in a common sense.

I have worked on many of these systems and they all work the same. The card has a # embedded in the magnetic strip (may be a barcode). This is usually on the card itself. Cards expire at time of purchase. Therefore, the card is useless until activated.
At that point, it goes "live" and money is associated with it. That is, at another station somewhere else there is a file that has this card #, when/where it was activated, numbers, etc. what your system says and what they record). Since the cards are stored, it is easy for them to mark if the cards are stolen (it doesn't matter because they are worth $0 until they are activated).

I found out through other sources that there are at least eight card processing services that integrate with different markets. Every shopping center uses one. When a card checks through the list, the customer notifies the card processing service (reveals the PIN that can be activated), and then the card processing service can notify us via an API call.
Then, when the customer goes to activate their card, we can tell what was checked through the register (because they were opened). This way, we can avoid problems related to stolen cards or lost pin numbers. I had the pleasure of working in one of these systems right out of college.
Depending on how they handle their work, whether the end of day or week report can cause problems. One thing I noticed is that if the owner of the card, whether it's correct or not, if they were able to buy more than the beginning balance of the day but more than > at the end of the day.

Start the rest. Selling. It's not fun when a company spends $100 per user per day. As a safety measure, hold the company you buy from responsible. That's the best way to handle it that I've seen, because they're there. Hope this helps in some way.

You have to be careful, I've seen this game in stores. The customer doesn't say anything, but the customer behind them reaches for their card and swipes it to collect points for something they didn't buy...so points are earned at the customer's loss because the customer's (loyalty card owner) personal shopping information and items they didn't buy...online
Not enough available in stores. In short, there is no foolproof way to identify a customer other than asking for a retina scan or fingerprint. Some customers will be wary of joining the company because of their privacy...that's another thing to remember...not all of them have a loyalty card...I believe it's very hard to find a server that has a problem with the results.
Print (or release) card numbers. When a customer wants to buy a gift card, it is checked against the list and the list tells the server that the card has been accepted (perhaps with confirmation from the cashier). Then when you enter your site, the site will check with the card server that the card number is correct and acceptable.
Also, stolen cards are not allowed. If someone knows the numbering scheme, then you can be blocked so it is assumed that the numbers are separated with enough digits so that it is not possible to select the numbers (eg CV2 code). This is similar to how debit cards work: card number/CV2 generated ("server") -> sent to customer -> customer activates by phone ("register", "authenticates" with their SSN or similar) -> customer then uses in store
