Jack Adam gave up his alligator ranch in Lindsay and Maine in the early 60's for life in the clergy in Nevada. Although its interesting buildings still attract the curious, the Buckhorn Baths have been closed since 1999. One of Main Street's past is the Hi-Jolly Gift Shop at Greenfield and Main — though the Reptile Zoo's citrus grove and its citrus trees are gone.
So is the once bright neon sign and the long, rickety, low building with more than a dozen hand-painted signs used as tourist bait. Hi-Jolly, now located in a nondescript mall, is still alive and well, selling "souvenirs, Indian jewelry, moccasins, dates and walnuts." Max Skolnick, the son of Russian immigrants, was an everyday person.

He came to Arizona from Los Angeles with his wife Della in 1947. Apparently to die. Suffering from tuberculosis, Max was told he only had a short time to live. In the end, the "short time" lasted until 1982. In reality, Della survived by a decade.

After several business failures, Max finally found his calling—at La Palmera, John Babcock's citrus grove in East Mesa, a date plantation, and a roadside store. In 1948, shortly after he discovered it, Max convinced Babcock to lease him the entire company, which he quickly named Hi Jolly, after the legendary camel driver brought to Arizona by the Army in 1871.

Later he added a collection of wild animals from Arizona, reptiles - snakes and alligators and the like. Oh, he also imported trained seals.
