At some of the distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, there are bottles you won't find anywhere else - a rare item that can only be purchased on site. One of the benefits of going on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, besides the scenery, the people and running up a bar tab trying to taste every bourbon you see, is getting Grab bottles you won't find anywhere else. There are the sought after bottles that barely touch liquor store shelves before being snapped up, like anything from the Willett Family Estate collection or the Parker Heritage Collection at Heaven Hill - but then there are bottles also that you can't get from anywhere but the distillery gift shop, on purpose; the distillers want you to come hear their story and see the facility, after all. These were the outstanding bottles we found in the dozen distilleries we visited. Taste aside, they will be a difficult find for any collectors without a driver's license and a Kentucky road map. Master Distiller Selected, Single Barrel: Master Distiller Jim Rutlege hand-selected a 10 year, 4 month barrel aged OESQ Four Roses bourbon (20 percent rye mash) for their gift shop. According to Rutlege, there is light floral and wild honey on the nose, a creamy honey butter note on the palate and a long finish with hints of mint and roses. Single Barrel bottles from the other nine casks are also available. William Heavenhill Small Batch (left): This is the third edition of the very rare William Heavenhill bottles that can only be found at the Heaven Hill gift shop. It is made from 10- to 11-year-old casks within Heaven Hill Bottled In Bond warehouses that are hand-selected and blended by Master Distillers Parker and Craig Beam. record of William Heavenhill. Increasing the proof from the Small Batch, this barrel strength is 135.6 proof and aged 15 years. American Stillhouse Clermont Limited Edition (left): The Stillhouse sports a label made of barrel wood and numbered and signed by Fred Noe. No age statement or mash bill information available for this one.The distiller's masterpiece finished in PX Sherry Casks (center): The first release of the distiller's masterpiece from Jim Beam finished in cognac barrels. The second was port barrels. In third place was a sherry cask - and this one, the fourth, continues the trend. The bottle is 100 proof and comes with its own case (pictured). Old Tub (right): This Jim Beam whiskey sour mash is bottled in a bond and served in a prohibition-style bottle as a tribute to the first distillery, called Old Tub, where did Jacob Beam sell his corn whiskey casks around 1795. Maker's Mark Cask Strength: When faced with low supply and high demand, at first, Maker's Mark wanted to drop proof of their bourbon to increase their stocks. But after a general outcry from fans and requests from insiders for proofs to go higher, not lower, Mark Maker released a barrel-strength offering. Rougher than their regular bourbon, the 375ml bottles (this one is 113.3 proof) can only be found in the gift shop or bars, for now. Evan Williams 23 Year Old: This is the oldest offering under the Evan Williams name, and one of the oldest whiskeys you will find in a bottle. At $400, this isn't a steal, but it's the smoothest and most oaky bourbon that Artisan Distiller Charlie Downs serves up at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. I bought Elijah Craig 12 years, I really like that stuff and always have, but sometimes it's not always on the shelf in Minnesota. Also, I bought a couple of bottles of Bernheim, unfortunately I didn't really like them, but a good wheat bourbon to have around for friends to try. I also bought a bottle of Evan Williams single barrel aged. This one was expensive, and I haven't opened it yet. Several of the great bourbons that people say you should go to the distillery for have sold out. Are the rarest HH bourbon offerings ever sold at the gift shop? If so, how would I know when? There were a variety of things for sale – coasters, shirts, hot sauce, etc., but I can't remember which bourbons... sorry! I usually buy products that are not sold in stores. Many of these places come out with new products and some that are only sold in the gift shop. They have a wide range of choices. Be sure to buy the $2 cookbook. It's great They have a wide variety of Heaven Hill products, including some bourbons you won't find anywhere else. Their website may have a complete list. Bourbons that are brewed there.
