NEAR WEST SIDE — A 137-year-old Near West Side church received landmark status Wednesday after a City Council vote. Greater Union Baptist Church, 1956 W. Warren Blvd., was designated a city landmark at the same meeting where aldermen marked the southernmost point of the promontory.
The church has stood since 1886, after members of the Church of the Redeemer settled there. The congregation was founded in 1858 by A. C. Barry and was made up of Civil War Union soldiers and volunteers who were staunch abolitionists in the town's report on church preservation.
Church of the Redeemer also held lectures on child welfare and women's suffrage, city officials said. Jenkin Lloyd Jones, uncle of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, also taught there for many years, officials said. A Church of the Redeemer congregation raised funds for Wilberforce College in Ohio, the oldest historically black university, and provided food and housing assistance to more than 2,000 people, city officials said.
Near West Side’s Greater Union Baptist Church Is A Chicago Landmark
Ownership changed hands in 1928 when a black Baptist congregation purchased it for about $37,400 and converted it to Greater Union Baptist Church. The church was active during the civil rights movement, being active in the NAACP and raising funds for the victims of the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, which killed four black girls, officials said.
Church members also supported boycotts of Chicago public schools to protest racial segregation and overcrowding. The building was designed by William Le Baron Genny, creator of the skyscraper. It has been their place of worship for the past 94 years. The City Council drafted an ordinance in March to approve the church's landmark designation, which would protect the building from major renovation or demolition.

Construction on the west side of Ravenswood station was completed in 2015. The work on the eastern platform has been delayed several times. "We've lost a cornerstone of the neighborhood, it's all grown up, and now the area is so nice they're being forced to leave," the neighbor said.
The push for the in-person meeting comes as residents struggle to "find a sense of closure" after the Crawford coal plant explosion, the head of an environmental group said. This organization is not required to file an annual return with the IRS because it is a church.
