believe that all volunteers should have the tools to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they. want to participate However, despite the best intentions, some organizations that offer placement in orphanages may unknowingly put children at risk. You can read about the potential dangers of volunteering at orphanages here.

My name is Ina and I am a work study volunteer for the IHF International Humanitarian Fund in Bali. I'm a 19 year old high school graduate from Germany doing my gap year. I will definitely want to volunteer during the trip and therefore I have been looking for opportunities to do so.

Fortunately, I saw one of the IHF advertisements and started to learn about this foundation. I liked the idea of being able to work with children and have some understanding of the structure of the organization even though I was doing international network assignments. The IHF also seemed like a reliable place to go, which I thought was important since I had never been to Southeast Asia before and wanted to be sure of where I was going.

I teach four English classes twice a week and we have two separate days each week to do a craft with the kids to keep them around and connected to the center apart from going to lessons. You can see that this concept works because the kids always come to class early just to draw something or play a game with us.

You can see they like it here. I have no regrets coming here and would recommend IHF to anyone who wants to work and make a difference though doing so. I have volunteered a while back, but never for an actual NGO. While looking for opportunities in Asia, I found IHF and was inspired by the work it does for children and local communities.

I needed NGO work experience for my future and IHF seemed like a good choice, so I applied and settled in Medan. I work on my international assignments online in the mornings and early afternoons, then in the evenings, I help teach English in some of the classes.

The center here provides additional education to supplement the missing school system. On Fridays, I lead the Special Activities class, which allows children to experience things outside of the standard curriculum, such as arts and crafts or cultural exchange programs. The center also visits TEP students who do not attend evening classes, but who have sponsors to help them with daily life and school expenses.

The children are full of energy and always smiling and the volunteers enjoy being with them. In my short time here as a Work Study Volunteer, I have learned a lot about how an NGO works with its staff and community and skills that will be useful in my future.

I had never volunteered abroad before coming to Bali. What amazes me is that everyone here is so friendly. Coming here has always been one of my dreams, but this time is definitely a whole new experience, to be away from the busy road and noises, to hear the sound of the waves and fall asleep.

Waking up every morning to people's smiling faces. One thing's for sure, I'm having the best time of my life right now. My name is Clara Lo, and I am currently an accounting major from Queen's University in Canada. Through my university's job board I learned about the International Humanitarian Fund (IHF) and I am very happy that I applied to be part of this organization.

About This Data

I volunteer at the Bali Center for IHF and this center offers English, Maths and Computer courses to students of all ages and castes. At the center, I spend my mornings doing online work for IHF, my afternoons preparing and teaching English and computer lessons, and my nights with my fellow volunteers and locals from the nearby village.

Together, there is a deep sense of community here that I have never experienced before in my life. I came here without any expectation of being part of such a community, because I just wanted the experience of working for an NGO. However, I am glad that my experiences were much more than that and I can honestly say that I found happiness in volunteering at IHF.

Now completing my third week of volunteering with IHF, today is the day I officially start counting down the last week. This work study volunteer opportunity is a life experience that I will never forget. Banda Aceh's welcoming community, loving children, beautiful scenery and fascinating attractions are just some of the reasons I will truly miss this country after my time here is over.

I always thought it would be nice to volunteer for an NGO abroad, be it administrative work, natural disaster cleanup, building, or teaching, but I could never find a short-term opportunity. Knowing I couldn't leave for more than a few months, I put the idea on the back burner.

Which Organizations Are Here?

Then I came across the International Humanitarian Foundation on the Volunteer Canada website. Now, instead of having no options, I had 2 short term options to choose from! I knew that two weeks would not be enough for me to get an experience that would meet my expectations (IHF's volunteer tourism program), so I chose the four-week work-study program;

I'm so glad I did, and part of me wishes I had stayed longer. Although three weeks is a relatively short period of time, it's enough to give me an idea of what life is like with less at my fingertips and in turn to have such an appreciation for what I have.

The families here are so friendly, always willing to bring international volunteers with them to show Aceh's attractions; museums, shops and beaches to name a few. They enjoy hearing stories about where the volunteers are from, their culture and stories from home. Wanting to introduce ourselves to their friends and expose ourselves to as much of the beautiful Acehnese life as possible in the limited time we are all here for.

Along with the local volunteers, the other international volunteers here at IHF Aceh make this a really comfortable experience; I never had a moment where I didn't feel safe or cared for. We spend most days in each other's company and really care for each other.
