Gingerbread House Gift Boxes
Gingerbread House Gift Boxes - A completely edible Christmas present - gingerbread cookie boxes and mason jars! You make a Mason Jar by simply twisting the dough around the jar! You don't need cookie cutters, mixers, or any other special equipment to make them. Or baking talent (which I miss).

Gingerbread House Gift Boxes
My kind of Christmas baking!! "Gingerbread boxes and mason jars are my go-to solution for a holiday piece/gift that is more reasonable in size than making a giant gingerbread house that won't get eaten." Last year I made a gingerbread house for my family's Christmas dinner.
Apart from the tin of lentils I used to stabilize the walls that got stuck in the house (I forgot they were there when I put them on the roof) and the house tilted a bit when I got to my house mom drove (hence the tape around it) , I was quite surprised by my efforts .
Especially considering it was my first time trying it. However, after a 12-course Christmas dinner, there was little room for dessert. So after all my efforts to make the gingerbread house (I even made a snowman!) only part of the chimney and about 1/8 of the roof was chewed off.

So I swore I'd never make a gingerbread house again unless I went somewhere with 50 people! But as Christmas 2014 approached, I had nagging thoughts about making something out of gingerbread because… well, I just love gingerbread. It's the only time of year I do it, it sings Christmas to me.

And since it was my first Christmas with my blog, I wanted to share an edible gift recipe. Something else. "Gingerbread Mason Jars are very easy to make as they require no construction. Just roll the dough around a parchment-lined jar and bake. It's that simple!"
And that's the story of how the idea for gingerbread boxes and mason jars came about. A more reasonable size than a giant gingerbread house that would require an army. Something that is easy to transport, packs well and is not difficult to make. make (because I don't do difficult things!) these.
it took me several tries to get it right. I only found one gingerbread box recipe on a commercial recipe site. I won't go into details, but suffice it to say it didn't work. So I decided to make one myself. First of all, I assure you that they are very easy!

They take time, but are not difficult. Don't let the length of the instructions fool you! I mashed 2 recipes into one (i.e. boxes and mason jars), plus it clearly spells out how to cut the dough and make the boxes. If you don't like the mess, I recommend making Mason Jars because they have no construction
require. All you need is an empty jar lined with parchment paper (parchment paper). Then wrap it with dough. It sticks perfectly because gingerbread dough is quite sticky. Another step you usually don't do with gingerbread is refrigerate it. This will help keep the Mason Jar from sliding down during cooking, as it needs to be cooked upright.

I tried baking it on its side, but the pot ended up flat on one side, which didn't look too nice! You don't even need to "glue" the base. If you use the tin to push out the circles, the circles should fit almost perfectly in the bottom (if not, just cut them with a knife).
And since gingerbread cookies are a bit sticky, the bottom stays in place without the help of icing or melted chocolate. The squares are easier to cut out because you need 8 squares for each square. But they take longer to put together because you have to glue them together with melted chocolate (which I believe sets faster and is stronger than Royal Icing).

Since the gingerbread squares expand slightly when baking, it is necessary to trim them a bit to make construction easier so that the box sits flat on the table. It takes a lot of time to explain this in words, so I made a chart to show you (see recipe below).
I think they make a great gift - for Christmas or any other occasion! You can fill them with anything you want. I filled my homemade Chocolate Ganache with truffles (psst, I have some tips to make them roll very easily instead of looking like a chocolate fight!).
So to all my friends and family (in Sydney, Australia) reading this, I think you know what you're getting for Christmas this year! 🙂 *** UPDATE – Which one should I do? I've had a few people ask me which was easier to make, Mason jars or boxes.

Mason jars take less time because they are actually quite easy and quick to mess up the jar. After baking, you just need to press the bottom (no glue needed). The boxes should be made from melted chocolate, which isn't difficult (I've provided some tips to make it easier than you think), but it does take time - about 15-20 minutes to complete.

However, preserving jars run the risk of sliding across the bottom of the jar during firing, resulting in the bottom of the jar being wider than the top. My recipe includes steps to avoid this, and the gingerbread recipe I use I also use specifically for Mason jars because it's lighter and less buttery (so it holds its shape when baking instead of sliding around the jar).
