2004. The magnitude 9.1 quake ripped 900 miles of fault line where the Indian and Australian tectonic plates meet. It is a strong earthquake of great magnitude, which occurred when a heavy oceanic plate slides under a lighter continental plate. The earthquake caused a sudden rise of the ocean floor by up to 40 meters, which created a massive tsunami.
Within 20 minutes of the earthquake, the first of several 100-meter-high waves hit the coast of Banda Aceh, killing more than 100,000 people and reducing the city to rubble. Then, in quick succession, tsunamis swept across the coasts of Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka, killing tens of thousands.
Why Was The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami So Destructive And Deadly?
Eight hours later and 5,000 miles from the Asian epicenter, a tsunami swept the latest victims off the coast of South Africa. In total, nearly 230,000 people died, making it one of the deadliest disasters in modern history. Since the 2004 tsunami, governments and aid groups have prioritized disaster risk reduction and preparedness.
Just three weeks after the tsunami, representatives of 168 countries agreed to the Hyogo Framework for Action, paving the way for global cooperation to reduce disaster risk. Since then, earthquake sensors have been installed on the ocean floor to provide early warnings, and many communities have been trained in evacuations and disaster response.
Major earthquakes and tsunamis in August and September 2018 tested Indonesia's ability to respond and recover. Then, in December 2018, sustained eruptions of the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait triggered underwater landslides that triggered tsunamis that battered the shores of both Sumatra and Java.

Where Did The Earthquake Hit?
Nearly 230,000 people died in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, making it one of the deadliest disasters in modern history. The first giant tsunami from the Indian Ocean reached the city of Banda Aceh, with a population of about 300,000, within 15 or 20 minutes of the earthquake.
Few of the residents of the densely populated area realized that the earthquake they felt could cause a tsunami, and there was no time to flee to higher ground. Traveling at 500 miles per hour, the waves spread to faraway countries, including Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India.
Without any warning, the coastal residents were swept away by the shock waves. Many families who used to make a living from fishing have lost everything. Entire communities were wiped out by the tsunami. The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake struck 150 miles off the coast of Sumatra Island, northwest of the Indonesian island group and 31 miles below the ocean floor.
The earthquake occurred along a fault line between the Indian tectonic plate and the Little Burma Plate, which is part of the Australian Plate. The Indian plate is a heavy oceanic plate, and it has slid under the lighter coastal plate, creating a 900-mile-long rift.
