Once known as the "Wall Street of the South," the Strand is the main shopping street in the historic downtown area. Shopping here is a pleasure. Instead of crowded malls and crowded high-end stores, you'll find souvenir shops, art galleries and cafes where you can relax when you need a little break.
As you pop in and out of the various shops, admire the 19th century architecture in the area, which is designated a National Historic Landmark. There are more than 100 stores in an area that covers 70 blocks. It's all walkable, so bring your walking shoes and make a day of it.
