Most people are familiar with travel rewards and cash back credit cards; in other words, cards that give you more money for travel and everyday groceries. But a new rewards credit card from Rocket Mortgage is taking credit cards to a place they've never gone before: mortgages.

The Rocket Visa Signature® Card is a cash back credit card designed to help you save for a down payment or pay off your mortgage. While that sounds good in theory, the card also has limitations that could make it less useful for homebuyers who don't want a loan from Rocket Mortgage.
The Rocket Visa Signature® card earns 5 Rocket Rewards points for every dollar spent. The value of these points depends on how you choose to redeem them, but you can earn between 1.25% and 5% on daily purchases. Refinancing options include: Savings: This credit card has one of the longest 0% intro interest periods.
Plus: Save while you pay off debt with one of these top balance transfer credit cards. For example, say you spend $7,500 on your Rocket Visa. Get 37,500 Rocket Points. These points equal $375 for your down payment or closing costs, $150 for your Rocket mortgage, or $93.75 for refinancing purchased as a statement.
This Device Is Too Small
Perhaps the biggest downside to the Rocket Visa Signature® card is that you'll pay $95 a year, unless you have a mortgage with Rocket Mortgage. So if you want to use this card to save on a down payment or to pay for closing costs on your first home, you'll pay Rocket $95 a year.

Assuming you use your Rocket Points for a down payment or closing costs, you'd need to spend $1,900 to get $95 in rewards. You also have to spend about $3,166 before this card is any better than a no-annual-fee credit card with a 2% interest rate.
At $3,166, the free annual plan earns $63.32 at 2% back; the Rocket Visa Signature® card will cost $153.30 minus $95 annually, or $63.30. The average American family spends more than $3,166, so this card appears to be worth more than most cards with no annual fees.
But here's another catch: For your Rocket Points to be worth more, you need to get a mortgage with Rocket. That's right: If you choose another lender, your Rocket Score is $0.0025, not $0.01. That limitation can make this card unsafe for home buyers. The card may force you to choose Rocket Mortgage as your lender, even if you can get a lower interest rate from someone else.
How The Rocket Visa Signature® Card Works
The Rocket Visa Signature® Card is useful if you choose Rocket Mortgage for your home loan and plan to use your Rocket Points to pay closing costs or your down payment. This can be useful if you already have a loan with Rocket Mortgage and want to apply your credit score to the loan balance.
The card has a $200 welcome bonus (earned after you spend $3,000 in the first 90 days), which can add up to a $95 annual fee for a minimum of two years. That said, if you're not interested in getting a home loan with Rocket Mortgage, even a welcome bonus will make this card count later.

Before applying, you may want to consider a cash back card with no annual fees that earns 5% in quarterly installments, such as Discover it® Cash Back or Chase Freedom Flex℠. While these cards and mortgages weren't designed with you in mind, you can keep the income in a high-interest savings account and save it for when you buy a home.
If you're using the wrong credit or debit card, your money could be in trouble. Our experts love this top option, which has an introductory APR of 0% through 2024, a crazy cash rate of up to 5%, and no annual fee. In fact, this card is so good that it is used by our professionals.
