The gift diagram was born from the observation that giving is a pyramid. Regarding fundraising activities, most of the money comes from a few donors, while the rest are donated in smaller amounts, but by more people. That way, you can create a chart that shows how many donors you need for each of your funding goals.
The chart will help you determine whether different levels of donors are available to meet your goals. Different types of fundraising events have different donation forms. For example, fundraising events (when raising money for a building, pension, or other capital expenditure) may have more major donors at the top of the table.
You can reach 60% of your goal with just 6-8 people. With an annual event, middle and low-level donors may be more likely. So you can expect to get 30% of your final goal from 6-8 major donors. However, it is common to first use major donors to secure major donors, and then use those donors to encourage lower-level donors to buy into a project or event.
Creating A Gift Chart Is Job Number One For Any Fundraising Campaign
At annual events, charities often use a large gift as a gamble to encourage donors to give smaller amounts. You can even use a donation form for a crowdfunding campaign, but most donations will be much smaller. One source said the average donation for this type of campaign is more than $80.

However, with peer-to-peer fundraising, donations average $500 if people create a fundraising page for your cause. Your donation form for this type of event can use your estimate of how many people will respond to your appeal and how many evangelists you have. Creating a donation schedule should be your first step in determining whether or not you can reach your campaign goals.
Donation charts aren't built using this math: To raise $100,000 we need to ask 100 people for $1,000. Instead, they are built like a pyramid—we need one top gift, several major gifts, and many minor gifts. Of course, no campaign goes to schedule. For example, if you really want to make sure there are no significant gifts at the top of your chart, you'll need to adjust the percentages in the chart.
Also, there are multiple ways to raise money at different levels. For example, you could apply for a grant from a foundation or plan a series of direct mail campaigns. The key is to be flexible and adaptable. If you have an established donor base, your schedule with more significant gifts will be more important.
Case Studies
If you are developing your first donation program, your schedule will be heavy with many donations. Your next step is to start naming specific prospects at each level. Want an easy way to calculate your gift card? Visit this handy gift range calculator. Enter your target amount and see the results.

Follow the structure. Gift range charts and calculators are popular for major gift campaign preparation because they allow you to categorize major gift opportunities and see where major donors fall. You can then use this information to guide your gifting and recruiting strategy. Generally, as the gift amount increases, you need to offer less and less of the gift, so the prospect required also decreases.
